Fledgling: Part 9

Greetings All

I've actually run out of prewritten parts for Fledgling. I really need to get my butt in geat so you all can have an update come Tuesday. But until then, enjoy this update!

Saita watched as Fledge drew a variety of symbols around them. Rubar had taken them to a set of time corridors where no one would disturb them. The last time Saita had been through these corridors, she had been half-dead after the fight with Kay, and she remembered nothing of her experience.

The place smelled like a room that hadn’t been opened in ages. It tickled her nose, and she had to suppress a sneeze. She didn’t want to disturb the Fledgling Dragon as he worked. She had no idea what the symbols meant, but they reminded her of those Jethron had used when she was trying to regain her memories.

Fledge was well aware of her eyes on him, but he tried to ignore her. The symbols were something he had spent centuries learning but rarely used. Usually, when he was needed, he knew where he needed to go. He didn’t need to hunt like he was doing now.

He had a name and an approximate date. He would need to ensure that everything was perfect. The date could not be off, not even by an hour. Any changes outside of what they needed to do could affect a timeline they had no real business being in. However, he knew that if stuck around Saita long enough, he could break the hold that was on him.

Once he was sure he was ready, he looked at Matta. The Heavenly had insisted that he would not leave until he was sure that his charge was safe.

“You can leave now.” Said Fledge.

The Heavenly looked to Saita, and she nodded her head, “As soon as Red-Eye is with us, we should be fine. I will find Aidan and Bolx and bring them home.”

“Saita, you know how difficult this will be for you.”

Fledge watched Saita take a deep breath before nodding her head.

“I had my time with them. They should get to go back and experience everything I did.”

“Enough with this sappiness!” snapped Fledge. “Matta, leave. We have this.”

“You won’t find the answers you want.” Said Matta as he looked at him.

Fledge refused to acknowledge what he had said.

“Good luck to all of you.” Said Matta as he stepped out of the time corridor, a skill only Heavenly and a few like Rubar knew.

“Finally, I thought he’d never leave.” Fledge sat down on the floor and bade everyone else to do the same.

Saita did so reluctantly, as her left leg still pained her to this day. She had never managed to meet anyone who could replicate how her right arm had been replaced. This resulted in the prosthetic limb needing replacement every other decade. It was worse when she was still training. It had been some time since she had had the limb looked at, and now she wished that she had had that seen before coming on this mission.

Fledge seemed to ignore her pain and continued to reach his life force out toward the symbols that were around them. He twisted his head to look at Rubar and then gave one nod. The Vulpine reached between the three of them and used his claws to slice through the curtain of time.

Before Saita could say anything, Rubar stuck his snout into the opening and seemed to take a deep breath. He pulled his snout back and then looked at Fledge.

“You have the right universe and time, and on your first try. I’m impressed.”

“Oh, shut up.” Grumbled Fledge. “When we usually work together someone is rushing me to get to a certain point in time with very little information. Saita at least has an inkling of what she wants or needs.”

Saita almost wanted to reach through the tear that Rubar had created. The last time she had seen a tear this close was when she had been attacked by Red-Eye the first time. However, she had been alive long enough to know that she shouldn’t touch things she didn’t understand.

“Give it a few minutes to stabilise.” Said Fledge as he got to his feet.

Usually, creating these links between the time corridors and a specific time was easy for him. However, this one seemed difficult. He was almost sure that it was because he was messing with his own timeline.

Rubar inserted his claws into the tear and stood up, tearing it the rest of the way up.

“When Red-Eye attacked me the first time with his pack, they simply sliced through this and appeared.” She indicated the faint shimmer before them. “But you say it needs to stabilise first. Please explain to me.”

“Oh! It’s because we have to stabilise the time within the corridors with the time out there.” Rubar said before Fledge could stop him. “I suspect Red-Eye and his pack didn’t need to do this extra step, as the time corridor they were in was linked directly to your time.”

“And they’re not anymore?”

“Not while you don’t do your job.” Snapped Fledge. “Without a Fell Dragon, time corridors are difficult to maintain. We make do with whatever Fledgling is awake at the time.”

Fledge almost felt bad when he saw the shame on Saita’s face. While it was true what he had said, he knew the moment that she stepped into her role, there would be no need for Fledgeling Dragons. And no one had ever explained what would happen when this occurred. The only reason why the Fledglings were still of use was because Saita the Fell Dragon only appeared once in a while.

“It should be safe now.” Said Rubar as he stuck his clawed hand through the curtain.

“How come aren’t you affected by the portal thingy not being stable?” asked Saita.

“It’s called a curtain. If you’re going to be the Fell Dragon one day, you need to know the correct terminology.” Snapped Fledge.

Saita was getting tired of Fledge’s attitude toward her, but for now, she would take it. Her mother had always told her that she needed to grow a thicker skin to rule, and she had. For now, she would allow this young man to get away with his attitude.

“How come aren’t you affected by the curtain not being stable?” corrected Saita.

“Likely because of my Wolven ancestry.”

“Hey! I was the one that managed the connection!” exclaimed Fledge.

“And what is your ancestry?” asked Saita.

Fledge snorted and pushed his way through the curtain, leaving the two other members of his party behind. Rubar whined and tucked his ears against his skull before looking at Saita.

“Don’t ask about his family. It’s a very sore spot. I’m pretty much all he has.”

“Noted.”

“Let’s go.”
