“I thought you had him locked downstairs?” said Gorox as he leaned over to talk to Mortis.
“I sometimes worry about your attention to detail.” Said the undead Knight. “His rage is soothed for now and the queen saw fit that he joins us.”
Then he seemed to pause and turn his attention to Adrian.
“What happened to the sword?”
All eyes turned to the boy who simply pointed to his uncle.
“What sword?” asked Mary.
“And you wonder why I don’t trust you.” Said Vitex.
Adiran waved the comment aside and said, “I need more time with the blade to give you the answers you want.”
“The sword sealed the beast.” Said Robert meekly.
“That thing that attacked us in the throne room?” asked Mary.
“It is punishment.”
“It is a curse, and we will break it.” Said Vitex as she shook Robert.
“That may be more of a problem than either of you may think.” Said Adiran.
Robert covered his face in what seemed like shame, but Mary was sure it was silent sobs. She turned to Adiran and indicated that she wanted an answer to her earlier question.
Adiran sighed theatrically and said, “Who is missing from your court?”
Mary did a mental count of the people who had left the court, including the dead. Yet, no matter how many times she counted, she seemed to come up short a single person. She cleared her throat and then said, “You can’t be serious.”
“Oh, but I am.”
“What are you going on about uncle?” asked Magna.
“Which of you remembers the final battle between the avatars?”
The twins shrugged, clearly uncomfortable with where the conversation was going.
“The Cold One created its form from its armies. It also used them to create its weapon. What about the Fiery One?”
“It had a huge sword.” Magna put her head in a hand and slowly shook it. “I remember the fire around it, screaming.”
“I don’t remember that.” Said Adiran.
“You wouldn’t of, but one aligned to the Fiery One would have heard the screams of its most devoted, though misguided, follower.”
“Most devoted follower?” Magna seemed confused, then it dawned on her. “No! Really?”
She almost let out a chuckle and Mary cleared her throat to remind her daughter to show a little decorum whilst in a meeting.
“I am lost.” Said Letty.
Soon the rest of the table followed up with questions, but Magna could no longer hide her almost gleeful exclamation.
“It’s Darian, isn’t it?”
Adrain’s attention snapped to his sister and then his uncle.
“The Fiery One warped a man so much?”
“Only one that was truly dedicated. However, I feel the dear priest very quickly realised his mistake when his body and soul were sundered to create that thing.”
“But how did Robert get it? The thing was a gaudy fencing blade, not a huge flaming monster.” Said Magna.
Mary’s attention snapped to her daughter, “Gaudy? Like gold and jewels?”
“Yes, it seemed ridiculous.”
“Why does it look like you know something more than you should?” asked Adiran suddenly.
Mary thought for a few minutes and then said, “When you left to help my brother, there was a strange murder. A son killed a father using a cleaver, but the thing was made with gold and encrusted with gems. It made me nervous, and when I looked again, the weapon was gone and it never resurfaced. It was assumed stolen. How did you come by having this blade, Robert?”
Robert shrunk into his seat, not wanting to admit what he had done but Vitex placed a hand on his shoulder and simply said, “Tell.”
Taking in a shaking breath the man slowly told the tale of waking covered in blood, the dead peasants, and the taking blade that prevented him from killing again. Everyone listened in rapt attention, feeling more pity for the man than disgust.
Magna still had a wicked grin on her face. Adrian couldn't help but grin too. Darian had been a zealot that made all their studies torturous. However, not even Adrian thought he deserved to be trapped in a blade.
“Can he be freed?” he asked after some time.
Adiran shrugged his shoulders, “I don’t know. I haven’t had much time to look at the weapon to determine if there is anything sentient left in there. I think I may need Robert with me when I try again, as it seems that there is some sort of bond.”
“Can you cure Robert of his curse if you cure the sword?” asked Magna.
“These are two very different curses and well above my pay grade. If anything, it is the faces of Kai that could be of more assistance than I would be.”
“Then the sword needs to come with?” asked Magna as her smile dropped.
“Perhaps. Assuming it doesn’t try to reach for you.”
Adiran fixed her with a stare, and she avoided his eyes. She didn’t want him to know that it had already tried to pull her in.
Mary, now done with where this meeting was going, clapped her hands and said, “It’s time to plan your trips and get the resources that are needed. No more chit-chat.”
She then looked to Adiran and said, “You have a week to glean something from that sword, and if you cannot, it goes with Noxus’ group. Understood?”
“Yes.”
Back to you Zak.
