The Last Minute Cram

It was a few hours before the exams when it dawned on me that I had not read half of what I was taught. My gaze shifted from the clock on the wall to the book beside my pillow. I groaned and sat upright, trying to shake off the sleep as it was only an hour before the sky would brighten up.

Sleep refused to leave my eyes, but I had to get rid of it by force. I slid out of bed and crawled to the bathroom, turned on the shower, and put my head under it. I stayed there for a few minutes, shivering, just to completely wake up. Finally aware of my surroundings, I set out to begin my reading.

I skimmed through the pages of my book, reading aloud, trying hard to cram a few important lines that I felt would probably come up in the exams.

Two hours later, the sun was up in the sky. My eyes were heavy, but my exam was in an hour. I dashed to the bathroom and ran water over my head, rehearsing the little I had read so it would stick in my brain.

The hall was tense as the invigilators arrived. Their hands were filled with envelopes holding the question papers and answer booklets. They thudded them on the front desk, sending shivers down my spine. I glanced at the faces of my course mates and saw that they were just as terrified as I was. The course was too broad and boring.

In no time, the papers were distributed. When I received mine, I let out a long sigh as I read the first question. I went blank almost immediately and had to guess the answers for each question. The eyes of the invigilators peered at us like hawks, ready to grab our sheets if we dared to turn our heads.

“How was your exam?” Sylvia asked as I walked out of the hall. I frowned. “I wrote total rubbish." But, I hoped my magic would work again this time and when the results came out. A 'B' probably.
