Beyond The Looking Glass is the second book in the Unseen series, a story that came to me from the other side. A story where I thought I was just the narrator until I heard the Words of the Unseen.
This second story goes beyond time and place and mixes the long ago with the here and now. Because history keeps repeating, until we learn and do something about it.
Beyond The Looking Glass - Words of the Unseen - Chapter 16
A Moon Later
I stare at the water and focus on my breathing. I hear how Sei's is almost in sync with mine. Hers is a little softer, a little more feminine.
We had not been back for more than a moon and yet this already felt so familiar. At least something felt familiar.
Everything else felt slightly more out of place than expected. Which was strange because my cabin was just as I left it, well with an extra layer of dust.
The village, the fields, and all its inhabitants are barely touched by the whip that moves time.
Within a few days, I was even back in front of the class. In my absence, the task had been taken care of by one of the women of the village who, apparently relieved, was only too happy to put this task back into my sandals.
Everything was as if I had never left, only where Numico once sat, there was now a girl with wide eyes listening attentively.
Everything else was as usual, but not familiar.
What had I expected? Since the death of my sister, I have never really felt at home here anymore. Her departure must have taken away my heart's connection to this place. Now that I have seen a glimpse of the world beyond I feel even more disconnected from this simple life.
The sea and Kosa felt more familiar than this mountain where I spent so many years, and yet I ....
“Old man, shut up.” The intonation is like that night in the ruins in the forest, but the voice is much sultry, much more feminine, and many times louder. As if she was speaking with her mouth on my ear so close.
"You're not here to look back old man, that's for later."
This voice again, and again I can't place it. It is not theirs, it´s certainly not mine, and yet so familiar. I hear Sei, her tranquil breathing has become a tad disturbed, a little irregular.
Then an echo of a chuckle resonates in my ear.
Cold and wet, cold and wet. I continue to stare stoically at the water; Cold and wet, I repeat again and again until I feel it.
Until my dry clothes feel cold and wet. My skin feels slightly numb as if exposed to cold water for too long. Then I see Sei shiver for just a moment.
It´s enough confirmation of my suspicion. In an instant I turn on my side and grab her skinny shoulder, the unexpected momentum throws her completely off balance and without having to use too much force, the young woman leaves the flat rock. Pleased with myself I look at the girl that now floats in the ice-cold water.
"Cold and Wet, I warned you."
She comes up spluttering; "So that, how? How did you know?"
"And how did you know I could swim?"
"On the latter, I did not but as the stream is not strong this time of year even you can touch the bottom."
"On the first " I smile a very content smile, "I may be an old man, but I'm not completely crazy yet, but it was your snickering like a schoolgirl that betrayed you."
Sei looks disappointed, "I really would have told you, at some point."
"Well, I saved you that trouble," but I think you have a lot of explaining to do, young lady.
She looks different all wet like this. She looks so pure, so beautiful. Her childlike features seem to have been washed away. When I pull her up the stone again I see a glimpse of her chest.
I feel weird in my stomach, my sister never reached womanhood. My head knew what was happening, but I had never been confronted with it, it was never this real, this close.
I had seen it happen to Numico, with him it happened even faster. The boy became a man in a matter
of moons. Soon he would be the husband to the empress, but Sei.
She was the little girl hiding behind the door. Well, no that was the whole problem. She was no longer the little girl that could have been my sister. I have been ignoring all those signs as I wanted her to be my sister, till now.
I cannot unsee, therefore I can not ignore.
