When it comes to mental health, there are scales to it. There are also social and natural factors. It is no secret that I am autistic. It was something I was born with. Though I would realise this in the later years of my life, there were certain things I did not know how to deal with because I did not fully understand the problem – my problem.
When I said there are scales to the mental health, I was speaking in the terms of neurological weights. Some people are born with their mental circumstances and others just get affected by life and the weight of the world around them. In all this, people need to work out what works for them in fighting it.
Most of my life, I have dealt with depression and anxiety. These, I gathered, to be neurological and something I was born with. I had to figure out how to navigate my life through all this. It certainly did good that I later realized (with help) that I was autistic (on a milder scale) and this enhanced how I saw and worked on myself. I also had a long-standing battle with alcohol, and while I am sober now (over 15 years), I still remember the effects of that dreadful liquid on my mental health. I was a cluster fuck of a mess.
My experience in terms of neurological illness differs from the wide range of people experiencing the same thing. Right now, I am helping and teaching my son how to navigate autism and not see it as a disadvantage, because that is not what it is. We might be born with it but it does not mean that we cannot handle it. I learned that routines and systems help me a lot and over the past years, I spend a significant amount of time developing the ones that work for me.
For example, the way I deal with stress. My go-to would be to sleep and it always works. I think sleep is great when it comes to alleviating stress, and it is one underrated form of medicine.
S P A N I S H
