The loss of a tree is a loss for all- Julia Butterfly Hill
Growing up in a city, I hadn’t seen much trees in my life until I moved to another part of the country. I grew up in the capital city of Ghana which was a small place with a huge population. The whole city is covered in tall buildings and streets. The only time you get to see a tree is when you visit a home or a site with so many trees.
Moving to the north came with a huge shock to me. I didn’t even realise that I didn’t get a bigger view of the sky in all my years on earth until that moment. The northern part of Ghana is huge and blessed with so many tress. There are literally tress everywhere you pass and I believe that to be because there are not much people here as everyone is moving to the bigger cities for a better life.
Trees are very important in our lives as humans and also to our world as a whole. As they say, when the last tree dies, the last man dies. I’m starting to think we humans have forgotten that we get the oxygen we breathe from trees. This alone should tell us how important trees are to us. Aside providing us with oxygen, trees are used for a variety of thing such as furniture, paper, and many more.
Most of these things are also important in some aspects of our lives but, there are so many ways we can come up with these stuff without cutting down trees. And even if we wish to cut down trees, we should make an effort to plant trees as we cut them. Believe me when I tell you all these issues of climate change and no rainfall we have been facing this year is from deforestation and other practices of ours.
In Ghana, the ministry of agriculture celebrates the green Ghana day every year and with this initiative ,people are educated on the importance of tree planting and we are all entreated to plant a tree that day for a sustainable future. On days like this, most people who know about the importance of tree planting step out there to educate people , especially the younger generation while planting trees in their schools for them. I believe , it’s a very good way to promote a green future and saving our planet in the long run.
If you ask me, I would say the government needs to set rules and regulations for anyone who is involved in the felling of trees for their own or other purposes. A policy that ensures you plant two trees after cutting down one would surely be a game change for Ghana and the world at large. As individuals, we should also make it our responsibility to protect trees around us in our own little way because trees are more than just wood.

La pérdida de un árbol es una pérdida para todos. Julia Butterfly Hill
Al crecer en una ciudad, no había visto muchos árboles en mi vida hasta que me mudé a otra parte del país. Crecí en la ciudad capital de Ghana, que era un lugar pequeño con una población enorme. Toda la ciudad está cubierta de edificios altos y calles. La única vez que puedes ver un árbol es cuando visitas una casa o un sitio con tantos árboles.
Me sorprendió mucho mudarme al norte. Ni siquiera me di cuenta de que no había tenido una vista más grande del cielo en todos mis años en la tierra hasta ese momento. La parte norte de Ghana es enorme y está bendecida con muchos árboles. Literalmente hay árboles por todas partes y creo que es porque no hay mucha gente aquí, ya que todos se están mudando a las ciudades más grandes para una vida mejor.
Los árboles son muy importantes en nuestras vidas como seres humanos y también para nuestro mundo en su conjunto. Como dicen, cuando el último árbol muere, el último hombre muere. Estoy empezando a pensar que los humanos hemos olvidado que obtenemos el oxígeno que respiramos de los árboles. Solo esto debería decirnos lo importantes que son los árboles para nosotros. Además de proporcionarnos oxígeno, los árboles se utilizan para una variedad de cosas, como muebles, papel y muchas más.
La mayoría de estas cosas también son importantes en algunos aspectos de nuestras vidas, pero hay muchas maneras de llegar a estas cosas sin cortar árboles. E incluso si deseamos talar árboles, deberíamos hacer un esfuerzo para plantar árboles a medida que los cortamos. Créeme cuando te digo que todos estos problemas de cambio climático y ninguna lluvia que hemos estado enfrentando este año se deba a la deforestación y otras prácticas nuestras.
En Ghana, el ministerio de agricultura celebra el día verde de Ghana todos los años y con esta iniciativa, la gente es educada sobre la importancia de plantar árboles y todos somos tratados para plantar un árbol ese día para un futuro sostenible. En días como este, la mayoría de las personas que conocen la importancia de plantar árboles dan un paso adelante para educar a la gente, especialmente a la generación más joven, mientras plantan árboles en sus escuelas para ellos. Creo que es una muy buena manera de promover un futuro verde y salvar nuestro planeta a largo plazo.
Si me preguntas, diría que el gobierno necesita establecer reglas y regulaciones para cualquier persona que esté involucrada en la tala de árboles para sus propios o de otro tipo. Una política que garantice plantar dos árboles después de cortar uno seguramente sería un cambio de juego para Ghana y el mundo en general. Como individuos, también debemos hacer nuestra responsabilidad proteger los árboles a nuestro alrededor a nuestra pequeña manera porque los árboles son más que solo madera.
