The importance of trees is enormous to not just we humans but to animals and our ecosystem at large on earth. That's because they play a significant role in absorbing carbon dioxide in the air and, in return, producing breathable oxygen that sustains the lives of humans and animals. Because of how important trees are to our world, many nations encourage their consistent planting and even go as far as celebrating trees on a specific day in the year, and in this article I'll tell you about the one done in my country.
Like I said earlier, trees are highly essential in every community, and some other reasons why are because it helps us filter toxic substances in the air and give breathable air, which means it can act in the capacity of a purifier. It's also one of the top natural climate regulators we've got, and that's because trees naturally help keep the temperature of a place at a more conducive level, and that's not even forgetting that it also helps with soil conservation because its root helps prevent soil erosion.
The importance of trees still spans beyond just that because it also plays a significant role in the economy of a nation, as I can be cut down and molded into different furniture and important basic needs around the society, and lastly, but more importantly, it has health benefits; trees are the natural source of herbs that's used in treating most illnesses; it even places a significant role in the medicine industry and ultimately promotes our overall well-being.
I won't say there's a major tree celebration day here in my country, Nigeria, but Lagos, which is a state in which I reside, usually holds a yearly tree planting day, and it's a day where the state collectively encourages everyone to plant a tree in a bid to create an eco-friendly environment for the good of everyone in the community. The one for this year was held on July 14th of last month, and the theme for this year was nurture our future.
And that was the focus, with the aim to improve the status of most elementary school playgrounds. The goal was to have a playground that's full of green trees that emit breathable air within the school environment. Being a teacher myself, I joined in this act this year, and we planted a couple of trees within the school premises; unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures of that.
But aside from this celebration, there isn't any major one hosted by the entire nation, although some communities hold some in a spiritual manner, as they often see this tree as a portal to their gods, and that's why you see shrines situated around some trees in a community; for example, in Epe local government, you'll see some trees with clothes ties around them, and on the celebration day, you'll see the communists that are worshipers of such trees dress elegantly and bring different sacrifices under the tree to show their respect to their gods.
It's a colorful event that I enjoy watching even though I don't participate or practice such, but it's can be interesting to watch, and it also attracts tourists to the community, paving the way for more sales to local markets and the like.

La importancia de los árboles es enorme no sólo para nosotros, los humanos, sino también para los animales y el ecosistema terrestre en general. Desempeñan un papel importante en la absorción del dióxido de carbono del aire y, a cambio, producen el oxígeno respirable que sustenta la vida de los seres humanos y los animales. Debido a la importancia que tienen los árboles para nuestro mundo, muchas naciones fomentan su plantación constante e incluso llegan a celebrar los árboles en un día específico del año, y en este artículo les hablaré del que se hace en mi país.
Como he dicho antes, los árboles son esenciales en todas las comunidades, y otras razones son que nos ayudan a filtrar las sustancias tóxicas del aire y nos proporcionan aire respirable, lo que significa que pueden actuar como purificadores. También es uno de los principales reguladores naturales del clima que tenemos, y eso es porque los árboles ayudan de forma natural a mantener la temperatura de un lugar a un nivel más propicio, y eso sin olvidar que también ayudan a la conservación del suelo porque su raíz ayuda a prevenir la erosión del suelo.
La importancia de los árboles va más allá, porque también desempeñan un papel importante en la economía de un país, ya que pueden talarse y moldearse para fabricar muebles y satisfacer necesidades básicas de la sociedad. Por último, pero lo más importante, tienen beneficios para la salud: los árboles son la fuente natural de hierbas que se utilizan para tratar la mayoría de las enfermedades; incluso desempeñan un papel importante en la industria médica y, en última instancia, promueven nuestro bienestar general.
No voy a decir que en mi país, Nigeria, haya un gran día de celebración de los árboles, pero Lagos, el estado en el que resido, suele celebrar anualmente un día de plantación de árboles, en el que el estado anima colectivamente a todo el mundo a plantar un árbol en un intento de crear un entorno respetuoso con el medio ambiente por el bien de todos los miembros de la comunidad. La de este año se celebró el 14 de julio del mes pasado, y el lema de este año era nutrir nuestro futuro.
Y en eso se centró, con el objetivo de mejorar el estado de la mayoría de los patios de recreo de las escuelas primarias. El objetivo era tener un patio de recreo lleno de árboles verdes que emitan aire respirable en el entorno escolar. Como soy profesor, este año me uní a la iniciativa y plantamos un par de árboles en el recinto escolar; por desgracia, no tomé ninguna foto.
Pero aparte de esta celebración, no hay ninguna importante en toda la nación, aunque algunas comunidades celebran algunas de manera espiritual, ya que a menudo ven este árbol como un portal a sus dioses, y por eso se ven santuarios situados alrededor de algunos árboles en una comunidad; por ejemplo, en el gobierno local de Epe, se ven algunos árboles con lazos de ropa a su alrededor, y el día de la celebración, se ve a los comunistas que son adoradores de estos árboles vestirse elegantemente y llevar diferentes sacrificios bajo el árbol para mostrar su respeto a sus dioses.
Es un acontecimiento colorido que me gusta ver aunque no participe en él ni lo practique, pero puede ser interesante de ver, y también atrae turistas a la comunidad, allanando el camino para más ventas a los mercados locales y similares.
