What Is Your Most Favorite Bordeaux?

Hello fellow Wine Nerds! First let me say I so far have enjoyed talking about wine with a few of you here, you know who you are. Even though it has been sparse, I have gotten a lot from it. I have to say I am a bit of a loner these days. But don't get me wrong, this is just the fact that I am a father now, and a husband. The time I am not at work, I am spending with them. So I do not get to go out that much, and all my wine drinking is with my wife. So in order to talk, and share my wine experiences, it is here on Hive:)

A great example of these few, but meaningful comments came again from @svanbo, which you can see here. Just the mere mention of Bordeaux got me thinking of this great style of wine, which is typically a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot, Malbec, and sometime others. Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot are always the most dominant, depending on the vintage, and what side of the river that vineyards lay on. I have had many wines from the famous regions, but Bordeaux is a wine that I always keep coming back to. However it is a region that I understand the least when it comes to it's sub appellations.

Anyways I was saying just the mere mention got me thinking of Bordeaux, and over the weekend I indulged in some decent bottles. One with some good age on it, then the other that needed a good decant. I actually had the 2015 a while back in the start of 2021, and it actually needed a whole day of decanting before it was approachable. We had a glass the night before, but just wasn't felling it. But the next day, it was one of the best I ever had! This time it took about 1 hour before it was drinking near perfect. The 2010 was spot on! But even after having these 2 over the weekend, I have not quenched my thirst for Bordeaux. So, if you are reading this, and are a fan of BDX, let me know in the comments which one I should try, and what is a good age to have it at. Yes I know a Rothschild, or a Petrus would be ideal, but lets keep it a little cheaper then those wines, lol, CHEERS!

Sort:

I just came to see which ones you recommend :)

Ill be super honest with you. You can not go wrong with any Bordeaux IMO. Even the cheap bottles are good. Even on the ones that where not the greatest upon opening where so much better the day after. This is defiantly a wine I would say to decant. But thats just me.

Château Gloria, Saint Julien. I haven't ever been drinking it young though...

So funny you say that! Ive had my eyes on the Chateau Gloria at the local wine store. It is a 2018 though. But perhaps I can get it and just decant it for a good bit? I was a bit displeased when I went to another wine shop in a different town, they had the 2017 Chateau Gloria and it was priced at 70$, while the 2018 at my local shop is priced at 45$!

I don't know the prices, really... But that seems a huge difference. Decanting will not help in my opinion, the wine needs more natural maturation. I think it's a sin to drink it before it gets 10 years old, but maybe I'm wrong and it's just my taste. (Based on other St-Juliens, like the second wines of Chateau Lagrange and Chateau de Beychevelle). Anyway I'll try one once I come accross one! In general I find even 45 USD a lot of money for a "young" wine... But also this is only an opinion...

Yeah it really does come down to personal taste. But you are right. Wines like that do need some bottle age. I think I would rather find a 2014, or younger of a wine like that to open asap. 2018 would make me fell super guilty. However I did have a 2018 Marguax that was in the 40$ range, and I broke and opened it. But was very satisfied with it. But I am sure I would of been even more rewarded to wait at least another 4-5 years.

Oh Margaux, another one of my favourites!

Yeah man some good stuff! Or rather great, because almost all of it is good lol
