Today I was involved in a discussion regarding migrating some of the applications from self-hosting to AWS. This discussion started with the benefits we get from AWS and how it has been a challenging task to move the applications to AWS. Many companies have now begun thinking from this perspective where they get many things out of AWS. They want everything to be either AWS or Azure and they are not ready to keep in some other cloud platform.
I don't know if this is the case with all big MNC companies are just a few companies but some settle with giants like AWS and Azure. In the coming years, AWS and Azure is going to be making a lot of money by selling their services. I'm sure there will be more demand in the future too and they are at their peak right now.
Demand for cloud architects
Cloud architects are the people who do migrations or onboard applications to the cloud. Mostly they know more about cloud services and they can suggest best practices too. Cloud Architects are in huge demand everywhere. Not everyone loves reading more about AWS and getting certifications. Even when many people do it, they don't have hands-on experience. Someone with a lot of hands-on experience has a bright future.
From what I see, many companies want to enter the cloud and they are looking for cloud architects who can make this happen. Not just a normal cloud architect but someone who can solve their existing problems with moving and then make it happen.
Lift and shift approach
Many applications can directly be deployed with a lift and shift approach where the application is lifted just like that and then moved to AWS and configured there. This can be a little costly solution but then later if more work is done to identify where the cost can be reduced, the next approach would be to start using other services that AWS is offering as part of their cloud solutions. This is how usually migrations happen. Even for this to happen Cloud Architects are important.
Due to a shortage of cloud architects, the developers are asked to take care of deployments and CI-CD. Though it can be interesting for some people, some people may not love it. Somehow the deployment will have to happen. It is either the task of getting the right person to do the job or bringing someone up to speed on this.
Opportunity
People who are just out from the college or people who are keen on switching roles in their job can make use of this as an opportunity where they can start learning cloud basics and mostly AWS or Azure to become a cloud architects to migrate their client applications to AWS and also do regular supports and maintenance activities.
