🐪 🌵 TIL Camels Can Eat Cacti 🐪🌵

in #hive-1635214 days ago

Back with another fun trivia :D

So, today I learnt that camels can eat cacti, which I guess makes sense considering camels live in deserts, and cacti is one of the few plants that thrive there..

Here's a video showing one in action.. The crunchy noses to be weirdly satisfying, don't you agree?

Poor cacti. All those millions and millions of years of evolution to become practically inedible... And then here comes this weird looking horse and eats you 😂

With not much else vegetation growing in their habitat, camels have evolved to have tough lips and mouths that can withstand the long cactus spines. As for their tough outer layer, it stands no chance against a camel's strong jaw.

Their digestive systems are equally specialized for cacti consumption and easily break down and extract important nutrients and of course water.

According to the natgeo video below, eating cacti is a bit painful for camels but nothing they can't handle:

As one commenter noted, eating and tooth picking at the same time. Quite efficient 😂😂😂

Ok, this is it for today. Fun stuff 😂

I actually knew that. It was told to me by a curator at a zoo years back.

How many years decades back though?

I've always thought that it was such a cool ability to eat cactus like that. Camels are amazing animals perfectly evolved to survive in the desert!

I love it! Those camels are cute and seem to lubricate the meal well as it goes down😁

People eat squirming, live bugs. Live, wriggling octopuses. Maybe not painful (of maybe it is, going down) but certainly weird. 😂

Weird but not as prickly 😂

I now wonder if there's anything that can eat a hedgehog or porcupine like that 🤔😐

🤔

From https://biokids.umich.edu/critters/Erethizon_dorsatum/

"Even with all their defenses, porcupines are preyed upon by a several predators. The list includes lynx, bobcats, coyotes, wolves, wolverines, and great horned owls. Important predators include mountain lions and fishers.

Mountain lions and fishers have different stratgies for attacking porcupines. Fishers attack repeatedly from the front, avoiding the dangerous tail quills, until they are able to flip the porcupine on its back and attack the unprotected belly. Mountain lions supposedly make no attempt to avoid the quills of porcupines; instead they attack at will and deal with the consequences."

I actually dod know this one😂😂😂

Must be a painful snack though 😂

Not if you are a camel :p. But damn those thorns really look painful!

It's interesting to see. I guess living in the desert allowed them to evolve to survive better. It does make sense.
