Petaling Street, the Chinatown of KL, is a bustling hub where you can snag counterfeit luxury brands - bags, shoes, clothes, you name it. If you've got the knack for haggling, especially with the foreign vendors that dominate the scene, you're in for some serious deals. Funny enough, it's not much of a "Chinatown" anymore, having lost a chunk of its identity even before the pandemic. But hey, it's still a magnet for tourists.
It's been ages since I wandered those streets, especially post-pandemic. So, the other night, we decided to see what's up. Every time I'm there, there's this Tau Fu Fah stall I can't resist. Tau Fu Fah, for those unfamiliar, is a silky smooth tofu dessert served with a sweet syrup, a classic dessert in Chinese cuisine. Right in the heart of Chinatown, run by a local, it's still standing strong. Hands down, it's the best Tau Fu Fah in KL. But hey, challenge me if you've found a better one!
Later, we walked over to our go-to wholesale florist. We were a tad late, and they were about to close. Still, we snagged a flower to jazz up our space.
With all that walking, my stomach started its own protest. I remembered this Claypot Chicken Rice joint nearby, and yep, it's still there. Claypot Chicken Rice is a hearty dish where rice, marinated chicken, and sometimes Chinese sausages are cooked to perfection in a clay pot, giving it a unique burnt flavor and crispy rice at the bottom. Prices have gone up a bit, but the taste? Still top-notch.
Next stop? BookXcess RexKL, right across the street. This place has history. It was a cinema way before my time and has now morphed into a bookstore with a sprinkle of restaurants, art spots, fashion stores, and mini-marts. The bookstore, built in the old cinema hall, is an Instagrammer's paradise with towering bookshelves. I sometimes wonder if folks come for the books or the maze-like experience. Oh, and there's a rooftop restaurant on the 4th floor I've got my eye on for next time.
All in all, a stellar night in downtown KL. Can't wait to uncover more hidden gems next time!
