In my head it also meant after standing on that line that divides the earth, I will also be divided into two. (Any way, don’t judge me, I was naive). I got the opportunity to visit the Prime Meridian Longitude 0° Line yesterday.
The Prime Meridian Line Longitude 0° passes through Somanya in the Eastern Region of Ghana. This is the line that divides the earth from the Eastern hemisphere to the Western Hemisphere. I know it’s an imaginary line but I expected a line probably hanging in the air, hehe.
There was nothing special about the place. From what I even saw, it looked like it was right in the middle of someone’s farm because on arrival, we met some people working on that piece of land.
Apart from the signpost that indicates where you are, there’s a monument which built on the “line”. The “line” has been indicated with a red paint which makes it very easy to see. That monument just shows who donated the monument and the people who worked on finding the line.
What caught my attention were the mountains that surrounded the area. They looked so dreamy. Eastern Region itself is a mountainous region and those mountains are known as the ancestral home of the Krobos( a tribe in Ghana). The mountains are so beautiful and the skies are always pretty. The land is so green as compared to other parts of the country.
The mountains looks small and so surreal from afar. Whiles you start going closer, they begin to look bigger and so pretty. My favourite part is how the trees on the mountain looks like grasses from afar.
We wanted to go hiking and check out the whole city but we didn’t see signposts of hiking so we didn’t risk it. The mountains are ancestral homes for a reason. From what we were told, they mostly only climb the mountains during festivals when they need to pay homage to their ancestors.
Throughout the ride to the line and from the line, I just couldn’t take my eyes off the mountains. They truly are a sight to behold. I’m fond of sleeping during journeys but I didn’t blink an eye on this particular one. If you ever find your way in Ghana, check the line and the mountains out.
