Hello everyone I hope you are all well and enjoy the day, for today I invite you to the Snagov monastery that I drove through this place many times to the airport in Bucharest unfortunately until now I never had time to stop here. The Snagov Monastery is a medieval monastery located in the southern Romanian county of Ilfov, about 40 km north of Bucharest, on an island in the northern part of Lake Snagov. It is one of the oldest and most fascinating monastery settlements in Romania and an architectural jewel of feudal art.
Surrounded by the lakes of Snagov, it was once the most important spiritual and cultural center of Wallachia during the period of feudal rule. However, given the isolation of the place, which was surrounded by water and forests, in 1456 Vlad Tepes decided to build a prison for traitors, a bulwark, a bridge connecting the mainland with the island and a tunnel under the water. the monastery is especially famous as the possible burial place of Vlad Tepes.
Vlad Telpes also know as vlad the Impaler was a Wallachian princein the 15 century, he haved brutal methods on punishing hie enemies. He placed his victims on sharp stakes. his father was Vlad II Dracul, the name Dracul means Dragon or Devil. This is the inspiration for the later fictional caracter Count Dracula by Bram Stoker.
You can park in front of the island and then walk across the small bridge to the monastery.
Here auf this area archaeologists have discovered Bronze and Iron Age ceramics and Byzantine coins. Even the first historical reference dates back to 1408, it is believed that a small church has stood on this site since the time of Vladislav I abou 1364 - 1379.
To visit Snagov monastery you need to pay an entry ticket approximately 20-23 RON romanian Leu for adults.
This area is considered an exclusive residential location for people who want to escape the hectic city life of Bucharest. A mixture of luxury villas and traditional houses, and history give this place a unique atmosphere.
The Monastery is surronded by the tranquil waters of the lake providing a peaceful, historical atmosphere. The lake side makes the place perfect for a quiet relaxation. Traditionally the monastery was accesible only by boat, with a boat ride you will get more authentic experience.
Mircea cel Batrin in romanian history is considered one of the greatest leaders and defenders of the country, his name Batrin "the old" refers to his wisdom and his age in comparison to other rulers.
The church within the monastery contains frescoes and icons of great art value
So that was my short historical visit in Snagov, I hope you have enjoyed it
Thanks for your visit , have a great day!
