Exceptional and Lunar Experience on the Marquer Island

in #hive-163772last year

Who hasn't dreamt of living on an island ? If only for a few hours to get away from it all... Today we continue our explorations in Brittany with a visit to this island, which we were able to visit on foot as the sea was at low tide.

Indeed, once the sea is high, the island and its inhabitants are cut off from the world, or at least inaccessible apart from any boats, powered or otherwise. I won't talk about the people who invited us into their home, nor will I show too many images of the interior. I'm sure you'll understand !

DSC_0133 copy.jpg

This is the landscape that accompanied us as we crossed the empty sea. The house we reached is in the third image. All in all, I'd say the crossing took us just over 15 minutes, which is really quiet.

DSC_0139 copy.jpg

DSC_0175 copy.jpg

Here we are in the middle of the action with the black silt under the layer of sand, sticky and smelly, but it's quite pleasant all in all !

DSC_0148 copy.jpg

DSC_0157 copy.jpg

DSC_0171 copy.jpg

We're getting further and further from the coast, and you can see how far we've come in the next image. That day, I took the risk of taking my camera with me. A risk because I could have fallen into the mud and it could just as easily have rained! But fortunately, we all arrived safe and sound :)

DSC_0184 copy.jpg

DSC_0187 copy.jpg

Here we are on the first small island, which leads to the second, where the main house is located...

DSC_0190 copy.jpg

DSC_0199 copy.jpg

DSC_0202 copy.jpg

On the first island, we are greeted by an alarming sign: here is the small farm complex from the days when this island was still farmed.

DSC_0205 copy.jpg

DSC_0214 copy.jpg

But here's the house and the dyke that leads to it... Impressive, isn't it ?

DSC_0265 copy.jpg

DSC_0222 copy.jpg

There is no running water or electricity on the island. It's like living in the last century in the West, and it's the perfect place to go on a retreat, write a novel, cut yourself off from the networks, or all three at once !

DSC_0275 copy.jpg

DSC_0269 copy.jpg

DSC_0271 copy.jpg

After drinking tea with our hosts, we set off on a tour of the island, a tradition that every new arrival has to follow, and which we complied with effortlessly !

The vegetation here is mainly pine and fern... Some trees have been uprooted by strong winds, while others - fortunately the majority! - are still standing and, like this specimen, easily over a century old.

DSC_0277 copy.jpg

This is the view from the northern part of the island. You wouldn't know it from the pictures, but here the wind blows non-stop, gusting to almost 100km/hour with no problem.

The scenery is arid and if I had one regret, it would be that I didn't see it all covered in water !

DSC_0282 copy.jpg

DSC_0287 copy.jpg

A few granite mounds dot the surface of the island, which is just over one hectare in size.

DSC_0291 copy.jpg

DSC_0302 copy.jpg

DSC_0313 copy.jpg

Here are a few more views that are a little less mineral and lunar than the previous one. We didn't come across any here, but I can see two or three Scottish ponies with their big fur grazing here...

DSC_0309 copy.jpg

DSC_0318 copy.jpg

Here we are at the end of our tour, and here's a special detail: in the first image, you may have noticed this opening in the wall. This is a 'fishing door' or 'fish door'. When the tide is high, you put a net there and when the tide goes out, any fish that can't get through the net are caught. It's the lazy man's fishing method par excellence ^^ !

DSC_0326 copy.jpg

DSC_0323 copy.jpg

DSC_0329 copy.jpg

We're back at our starting point and after a few hours spent there, we're in a hurry to leave, as we don't want to get caught by the tide... a bit like the fish at the 'fishing gate' !

I hope you've enjoyed and found this mainly visual article interesting, and I'd also be delighted if you could share any experiences or island desires you may have in the comments :) Thanks for your time!

For information, my camera is a Nikon D5500 with a Sigma 17-70mm lens.

Have a great week, and take care,

Wow this is such an amazing place. For sure people living on here have a peace of mind away from social media.

This is for sure dear @jenthoughts, but in fact, they are still connected and for me, the best would maybe to be farer haha !

Regardless if it's high or low tide, the sea always looks spectacular, unbothered and at peace. Thanks for sharing this!

Exactly, I would have seen it one high tide, but I would have need to sleep there :) Maybe next time !

You're most welcome dear @netswriting, thank you for visiting 😇

So idyllic! I think most of us dream about escaping to an island - and while the one you shared is not what springs to mind, having perused your photos; I can definitely "settle". What a magnicent and yet quaint home

Yeah, the weather can be tuff there, but imagine a garden at the center, protected from the winds... This could be a real paradise !

Many thanks 😇 !

What an amazing place. It must g heave been nice exploring the small island knowing that soon it would not be possible to walk to. How do they get drinking water there?
I can imagine that it is really like stepping back in time. How many home or inhabitants are there? Sorry lots of questions.
I still recall from over a decade ago how exciting but was to experience the ebb and flow while in Brittany. We could walk quite far out and my kids were so excited when the water started coming in. I memorialized it with a photo on canvas. I was also excited I had as the change is very dramatic.
Now I will try to find out whether the island in the distance on my photo is where u visited.
Thanks for bringing back fond memories.

Hey @momogrow :)

I'm happy to to make you remember such moments, it must have been so impressive and beautiful !

In fact they have a water tank but they also buy some fresh mineral water from the shop nearby. On this island, they are only one family house shared by 5 brothers and sisters but none of them live here at full time, it's mostly a holidays house :)

Have a lovely day ahead ✌️

I have always heard of the island and I've been dreaming to live on the island ever since my first visit
Presently, I live on the island. It shows that my dream came true.
Nice pictures!

Ah, that's a nice way of seeing it !

Thanks @rafzat 😉

How utterly divine; I can imagine living in a situation like this - and a lot of the beach and vegetation remind me of where I grew up on the Isle of Arran in southwest Scotland... Though the high winds might be a bit wearing! I love the idea of being cut off like this, and having to work around natural rhythms and tides!

And oh, the fishing gate is magnificent: quite right - why labour when there is an easy way! Thank you for sharing this glorious post, dear @anttn - it was a delight to see it this morning 😊

Hey @clareartista :)

Mmh, I would love to discover more Scotland... but maybe I discovered some of the atmosphere here ?
I just looked a bit about your Island and good gosh, this looks sublime there, but I guess it must be quite windy as you said !

Yeah, fishing gate, this is just perfect !

Thank you dear, I hope summer is going well for you 🤞
