I have lived my entire life in one environment, In one State, and one city. I have never had a situation that took me far away from home. My parents weren’t open to the idea of letting us travel cause they thought we were still babies. So for many years, I read about other people’s cultures, other states, and also other cities but I never got to experience it. Most times, I had nothing to say to my friends and classmates after every summer break because it was still the same city and nothing new had happened.
All that changed when I was done with University. I was open to traveling even if my finances were a limitation but I still went to some places that were not home. Those places were not so far from home but then I was excited I was seeing a whole new lifestyle and people living in those parts of the country. I haven’t had the opportunity of leaving Nigeria but I feel I will be leaving soon.
Well as of 2023, I was opportune to travel far away from home. That has got to be the farthest I have gone away from home and also the longest if you ask me. Well, it all happened as a result of National Youth Service, which is an obligation in my country for people who are done with higher institutions. You get to be posted to different parts of the country to serve the country and state for 1 year.
It happens that I was posted to the North, Kano precisely. I have spent all my life in the South. On the Nigeria Map, you will find out that Kano State is way up the map while Rivers State is below. My first time going to Kano, I had to use the road and we spent more than 24 hours on the road, that is to show how far it is from my home.
I was skeptical at first and everyone around me wanted me to come closer to my home, but then I was excited I spent a year far away from home. It had a different lifestyle from where I came from. In dressing, in culture, in speaking, in religion, everything was different. They say “If you go to Rome, you behave like the Romans” I did just that and I am thankful, that I was able to go through everything.
The journey to Kano was something else as it is far away, we had to pass through several States in Nigeria and even if it was just for a split second, I am glad I got a glimpse of what states look like.
Kano is indeed beautiful, it is the biggest Northern state in Nigeria, they possess good roads and also very good infrastructure which is something I admire so much about them. When it comes to being Industrious, they tend to top every State in Nigeria as they produce major products.
In a way, it was great going far away from home and experiencing the up north lifestyle. When I was coming back I didn’t bother using the road because I couldn’t afford to stay in transit for more than 24 hours
