The old pali road in Oahu was a rugged, winding, dangerous track over the spine of the cliffs which seperate the two sides of Oahu. In the 1980's they built a tunnel through the mountains and created a fast highway between Honolulu and Kaneohe.
This has left a wonderful walking trail along the old pali road. The area is rich in history as well, with the final battle for the kingdom of Hawaii being fought here in 1795. The defenders of the island retreated up this valley until they were finally forced off the 800ft cliff by the invading forces of Kamehameha.
The views from the trail are stunning. A massive landslide caused a huge portion of the volcanic island of Oahu to slough off into the deep water, leaving behind a steep and jagged ridge through the middle of the island. There is a very challenging hike along this ridge, but it is not for the faint of heart.
