Today I'd like to invite you to visit the Cuptorul Lagumei restaurant, which translated to English means The Furnace Of The Lagoon, which is situated in Street Republicii 19, in Fagaraș.
It is situated in the city center, 3 minutes walk from the Făgăraș Citadel, which is the main tourist attraction of the city.
We wanted a place to eat, nothing fancy, just good food and good atmosphere, but I'd say we picked a good one by choosing Cuptorul Lagunei.
We set down at the terrace in front of the restaurant, which is basically on the sidewalk, but as the historical city center is closed to cars, it's safe and quiet. There are a bunch of restaurants, bistros, cafes there, so it's not difficult to choose.
The waiter came pretty fast, brought us the menu. After placing the order, I went inside to have a look around and take some photos as always, but first asked for permission.
I did not hide my intention, had my phone in my hand. In cases like this, I'm always ready to accept whatever response I get, but to my surprise, they welcomed me to take as many photos as I like and they were even happy I was interested in taking photos. So here it is the interior, which was impressive.
I loved the rustic and quite original design. There were some really cool artworks too, which gave the whole place a nice vibe.
Tables were made of wood, the beams serving as lamps were quite an original idea.
There was this fireplace that in my opinion was something you don't see everywhere. Hand painted, nicely decorated.
In addition, there were a few old objects displayed, like this amazing clock and some old radios, to make the place look even more rusting and vintage.
Old photos and postcards are always a good idea if you want to remember the past.
I wanted to take a photo of this place mat, which was made of paper, because it had the history of the place. There was a bit of confusion as the restaurant is called Cuptorul Lagunei, yet the place mat and the napkins say Embacher house.
The explanation for that is that this place was the most famous during the interwar period, it was the confectionery, from where the Royal House of Romania itself procured its sweets. The name of the confectionery comes from the favorite confectioner of King Michael and the Royal Family, named Frideric Embacher. (from the place mat)
It's not the first place I see this place mat used, but the first that details the history of the place. I find it valuable as you can learn while waiting for your order to be served.
The place has been restored several times, but still kept the original architectural design.
Toilet doors are always object of amusement these days. Restaurants are racing each other in this matter, each one wants to be unique in this regard.
It wasn't easy to take these photos as people were coming and going and I looked like a creep, but I took my chances as the doors looked not only funny, but nice as well. That old looking dark wood with the grid on it, framed with bricks was priceless.
The menu. The offer was not abundant, but they had the traditional dishes one would expect. It was late afternoon and I did not want to overeat, so I got a Viennese-style chicken schnitzel, with potato wedges and cabbage salad, which I love.
When I saw the size of the schnitzel ... I said oh boy. I did not want to overeat an they brought me a schnitzel the size of an elephant ear. The dish had a paprika sauce, which did not inspire any trust as these are usually spicy, so I swapped my paprika sauce with a white sauce, which was phenomenal.
This was a tripe soup, which I was told was good. I love tripe soup and always have one serving when I go to the restaurant, but as I did not want to overeat, skipped it. This is the only soup I don't make at home for the obvious reasons.
Pork with French fries and the white sauce I swapped mine with.
After lunch, I asked for a black tea as always, but they did not have any, so my next best option was a green one. I loved how they served the tea there. That teacup was so lovely. I got honey and sugar too, but I always have my tea with lemon only.
The cutlery as brought in those paper bags, which is not only nice but hygienic as well.
The tea was great, so I'm going to check where I can find this brand. Most likely it won't be cheap, but quality always comes first.
A few lines earlier, I was telling you how my schnitzel was too big and I did not want to overeat. What do you think happened?
As soon as we started eating, this little cutie pie showed up at our table. Look at him! Just have a good look!
He was standing there, looking at us with those innocent eyes and his cute face. Now tell me honestly, how can you eat, when you see this cheeky thing looking at you? I knew right away who's going to help me finish my schnitzel 😂
First I gave him a piece of potato, but he was not interested. Then I gave him a big bite of schnitzel, which disappeared instantly. After that, he was only interested in me as he knew I have the yummy schnitzel on my plate. Needless to say he got like 40% of my schnitzel. I did not mind feeding him at all, as I knew I could eat whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted, but his meals were not guaranteed, so better know he's fed. The good thing about him was he did not jump on us or bother us in any way, he was well mannered in this regard. He didn't have a collar, so I think he was a stray dog.
All in all, I liked the place a lot. Prices were ok for our budget, the food was good, the place looked good, the staff was very polite and they served us in time. I would recommend this place if you're in the area. If you visit the place, please look for this cutie pie and give him a few bites as he deserves it 😁
