Even if during our trips to Venice we had our accommodation in Treviso, we ended up exploring this city a lot less than we intended, only getting to enjoy exploring this in one of the four days we spent in this citybreak.
However, thinking that there are still people who never visit this city although it has one of the main airports where you will lend if you want to head to Venice, makes me still feel honored for being able to get lost on the narrow streets and historicals parts of it, which always fascinate me whether I travel within my country or abroad.
We were actually enjoying our walk without too many destinations or directions to follow, letting our hearts wide open to be conquered by what we will discover on the way.
And Loggia dei Cavalieri represents one of the places we noticed and visited on the last moment, spotting it very randomly while admiring the architecture of the buildings, but still not knowing back then what it represents.
So we ended up taking a quick picture of the single informative panel we found that we could read when getting back home, making our knowledge a bit richer with what we were about to find on the internet.
That's how we figured out we are staying in front of a very important and unique historical monument that not only it's fascinating for Treviso but also for the whole Europe, dating since 1277.
Loggia dei Cavalieri, also known as The Lodge of Knights represents one of the symbols of the city, being a honour to have this building standil still after almost 800 years since it was built.
Loggia dei Cavalieri comes with an original irregular four-sided brick building having the main attention captured by the large violet granite column in the center.
The one who led the construction of this building was Andrea da Perugia who created a special place for the nobles of that time that could meet here and take part in parlour games.
Although the building was raised with a purpose, it ended up serving in more situations, one of them being as a timber yard that gathered quickly over one hundred of barrels to be safely stored. Then, in the 19th century, it became a storage room and a retail shop for coffins.
As the time was passing, the building started showing more and more degradations so the idea of getting it demolished was not late in appearing, but Luigi Bailo who was one of the most important admirer and curator of the heritage of Treviso, always protected this situation to actually happen.
Thanks to Luigi Bailo's intervention and the Municipality getting involved in restoring it in 1910, these days Loggia dei Cavalieri (Lodge of Knights) still exists, making it become from time to time the shelter of a temporary exhibition and shop for old books.
The full address of the Loggia dei Cavalieri (Lodge of Knights) is Via Martiri della Libertà, 48, 31100 Treviso TV, Italy and it's open for tourists 24/7 without needing to pay a visiting ticket for it.
Other places I've seen during my stay in Treviso:
- Porta San Tomaso and Ponte delle Università
- Fontana Delle Tette (Galleria della Strada Romana)
- Streets of Treviso
- Sacred Beauty: Exploring the Historic Churches of Treviso, Italy
- Loggia dei Cavalieri (Lodge of Knights)
