I love camping and here in Canada, we need to take advantage of the summer for that. I would say that the end of June until mid-September is nice and you still won't have problems with very cold nights. We decided this time to go on my longest drive to a place with the kids as a test also. It is a campground by a lake (as most of the time) and it is located 1h30 east of Edmonton, called Camp Lake Park in a city called Kinsella. It was our second camping experience this summer.
The first experience this summer was at Little Bowl Provincial Park, a camping ground. It was some fun but the kids were eaten by mosquitos, it was hot even during the night and the campground was full. So we had some stress factors and aren't sure if we will return. The only positive point there was the lake which was shallow and good for kids.
This time the travel was longer, almost 500km which gave us a little almost 5h of driving without counting the stop time. The other campground was in a short distance of 1h so for this time I had to plan a little bit better with 2 stops in the way. The road is very easy to drive and mostly a straight line. However, there aren't any big cities in the middle of the way. I decided to make the first stop at the city of Brooks to have lunch which is probably the biggest city to stop and after almost 2 hours of drive and also stopped by the city of Hanna, around 1h30 after Brooks. Hanna isn't a big city but it is known by being the hometown of the band Nickelback.
In Brooks, we stopped by a restaurant called Wasana, which is a Thai restaurant. It was a surprise for me to find this good restaurant. This place is owned by a guy from Laos, which is a neighbor of Thailand, but still, the food was pretty authentic. It was the best yellow curry chicken that I tried in a while with fresh vegetables and a good dessert of mango on top of rice with coconut milk. In Hanna I just stopped to get some gas and drink a coffee at Tim Hortons.
We left home at 10:30 from home and got there around 5:30 PM at the campgrounds. It was good timing since the sun was still up but starting to cool down a bit. Perfect timing for assembling our tent. The campsite had plenty of space for the tent and my car and a good privacy level compared to other campgrounds with many trees and bushes, including Saskatoon berries bushes. The campgrounds have one convenience store where you can buy basic camping things, including ice and in the same building you can find the only set of regular washrooms linked to the sewer system and showers, which didn't need coins to work with.
The only bad thing is that this set of bathrooms was closed between 10 PM and 8 AM, for us wasn't a big deal since we had a portable toilet in our tent and also there were like pit latrine 3-5 min walking distance. After assembling the tent we ate some grilled chicken and I could open a nice cold beer to relax. The kids could play in the playground located near the convenience store, also there was a volleyball field and basketball nets in the same complex. The night wasn't so hot like the previous camping experience and I had to use my sleeping bags.
In the next day we spent most of the day in the lake, which was nice with many trees. There are two beaches that we can have access to, one also has a pier where people bring boats and jet skis, and the other beach is more private for those looking to bathe and play in the lake. The interesting thing is that when I was done playing with my daughter and went out of the water we saw that there were tons of small shrimps attached to our clothes. Those tiny shrimps for some reason liked to attach to our clothes. At first, my daughter was scared but after a while, she and my smaller daughter started to collect shrimp in their bucket to create an aquarium there. Of course, after done playing they were returned to the water.
After relaxing on the beach the whole day we went to prepare some hamburgers for dinner and again some beer to celebrate a very nice fun and relaxing day in the family. While I was preparing the burgers we saw some ground squirrels, back in my home town we have also some, but these ones had some white stripes in the back. I just checked a website and here in Alberta, we have 5 different species of ground squirrels. This one was the Thirteen-lined ground squirrel. After the burgers me and my daughters went to a short hiking trail that ended also in the lake to see the sunset.
During the second night, we heard some coyotes howling in the medium-far distance, my wife got scared but I knew that they weren't so close. It is common to find these animals in the prairies. After waking up was time to set off the tent and prepare to leave back home.
In the way back we had to stop by a restaurant before getting to Hanna since we were about 2h from there, we ate in a regular dining place some sandwiches. I stopped after that in Hanna to get some fuel which was cheaper there and also to take some pictures of the welcome sign of the town which was interesting. After Hanna, I decided to drive directly home which gave me more 3 hours driving. The only problem during our way back was the doesn't of bugs that I hit while driving, I had to wash my car after that since it was attracting wasps. It was a fun experience in this campground and even being far we plan to go back.

Decidimos dessa vez fazer minha viagem mais longa para um lugar com as crianças como um teste também. Foi divertido, mas as crianças foram comidas por mosquitos, estava quente mesmo durante a noite e o acampamento estava completamente cheio. O outro acampamento ficava a uma curta distância de 1 hora, então, desta vez, tive que planejar um pouco melhor com 2 paradas no caminho. A estrada é muito fácil de dirigir e, principalmente, uma linha reta. No entanto, não há grandes cidades no meio do caminho. Decidi fazer a primeira parada na cidade de Brooks para almoçar, que é provavelmente a maior cidade para parar e depois de quase 2h de carro também parei na cidade de Hanna, cerca de 1h30 depois de Brooks. Hanna não é uma cidade grande, mas é conhecida por ser a cidade natal da banda Nickelback.
Em Brooks, paramos em um restaurante chamado Wasana, que é um restaurante tailandês. Foi uma surpresa para mim encontrar este bom restaurante. Este lugar é de propriedade de um cara do Laos, que é um vizinho da Tailândia, mas ainda assim, a comida era bem autêntica. Em Hanna, parei apenas para abastecer e tomar um café no Tim Hortons.
Saímos de casa às 10:30 e chegamos lá por volta das 17:30 no acampamento. Foi um bom momento, pois o sol ainda estava alto, mas começando a esfriar um pouco. Momento perfeito para montar nossa barraca. O acampamento tinha bastante espaço para a barraca e meu carro e um bom nível de privacidade em comparação com outros acampamentos com muitas árvores e arbustos, incluindo arbustos de frutas de Saskatoon. Os acampamentos têm uma loja de conveniência onde você pode comprar coisas básicas para acampar, incluindo gelo, e no mesmo prédio você pode encontrar o único conjunto de banheiros regulares ligados ao sistema de esgoto e chuveiros, que não precisavam de moedas para funcionar.
A única coisa ruim é que esse conjunto de banheiros ficava fechado entre 22h e 8h, para nós não foi grande coisa, já que tínhamos um banheiro portátil em nossa barraca e também havia uma latrina de fossa a 3-5 minutos de caminhada. Depois de montar a barraca, comemos um frango grelhado e eu pude abrir uma cerveja gelada para relaxar. As crianças podiam brincar no playground localizado perto da loja de conveniência, também havia um campo de vôlei e redes de basquete no mesmo complexo. A noite não estava tão quente quanto a experiência de acampamento anterior e eu tive que usar meus sacos de dormir.
No dia seguinte, passamos a maior parte do dia no lago, que era agradável, com muitas árvores. Há duas praias às quais podemos ter acesso, uma também tem um píer onde as pessoas trazem barcos e jet skis, e a outra praia é mais privada para quem quer tomar banho e brincar no lago. O interessante é que quando terminei de brincar com minha filha e saí da água, vimos que havia toneladas de pequenos camarões presos às nossas roupas. Esses pequenos camarões, por algum motivo, gostavam de se prender às nossas roupas. No começo, minha filha ficou assustada, mas depois de um tempo, ela e minha filha menor começaram a coletar camarões em seu balde para criar um aquário lá. Claro, depois de terminar de brincar, eles foram devolvidos à água.
Depois de relaxar na praia o dia todo, fomos preparar alguns hambúrgueres para o jantar e novamente algumas cervejas para comemorar um dia muito agradável, divertido e relaxante em família. Enquanto eu preparava os hambúrgueres, vimos alguns esquilos terrestres, na minha cidade natal também temos alguns, mas esses tinham algumas listras brancas nas costas. Acabei de verificar um site e aqui em Alberta, temos 5 espécies diferentes de esquilos terrestres. Este era o esquilo terrestre de treze linhas. Depois dos hambúrgueres, eu e minhas filhas fomos para uma curta trilha de caminhada que também terminava no lago para ver o pôr do sol.
Durante a segunda noite, ouvimos alguns coiotes uivando a uma distância média-longa, minha esposa se assustou, mas eu sabia que eles não estavam tão perto. É comum encontrar esses animais nas pradarias. Depois de acordar, era hora de desmontar a barraca e nos preparar para voltar para casa.
No caminho de volta, tivemos que parar em um restaurante antes de chegar a Hanna, já que estávamos a cerca de 2h de lá, comemos em um restaurante comum alguns sanduíches. Parei depois disso em Hanna para abastecer, que era mais barato lá, e também para tirar algumas fotos da placa de boas-vindas da cidade, que era interessante. Depois de Hanna, decidi dirigir direto para casa, o que me deu mais 3 horas de viagem. O único problema durante o caminho de volta foi a falta de insetos que bati enquanto dirigia, tive que lavar meu carro depois disso, pois estava atraindo vespas. Foi uma experiência divertida neste acampamento e, mesmo estando longe, planejamos voltar.
