The feeling of satisfaction that you get after accomplishing something that you've had a dream of from a very long time is unmatchable. Being in the healthcare profession, I have had countless of encounters with underprivileged people who couldn't afford to get proper treatment just because of financial constraints.
Pakistan is already an underdeveloped country and the people living far off in the rural areas are the most ignored people in the world. So recently, the organisation that I am a part of, Pakistan Association of Dental Students arranged a free dental camp in the Hunza region of Pakistan. I signed up for it immediately. Although, this trip costed me a lot of money but it was my dream to do something like this.
We visited Hunza, which is located in the province of Gulgit Baltistan. It's a really backward area where children don't even get their basic necessities. The school that we set up our dental camp was GANESH PUBLIC SCHOOL.
SETTING UP THE CAMP
We reached there early in the morning, around 8 am. We had all the stuff that we needed for this dental camp which included:
Medicines
Tooth brushes
Tooth Pastes
Goodie Bags
Dental Checkup instruments
Volunteers
Panaflexes
Ok sooo, let me guide you through the set up that we did. There were 8 OPD stations where the children would get their teeth checked. After the opd stations, we had set up our projectors and presentations in the classrooms where we were spreading awareness regarding:
Good Food, Bad Food
Maintaining Oral Hygiene
How to floss your teeth
Brushing Techniques
After the students attended these OPD Sessions, they moved towards the Medicine station where they'd get any prescribed medicines and a free Goodie bag which consisted of a toy, a toothbrush and a tooth paste.
THE OPD STATIONS
What was happening at the OPD stations? We checked the teeth of each and every kid that was seated at these stations. What were we checking? Any dental caries, the condition of the oral cavity, and broken teeth and other mormal routine stuff.
PAINTING STATION
Since we wanted this camp to be interesting for the children as well, we had also set up a painting station, where we had seated two of our volunteers who were face painting. The children asked for a lot of things to be painted such as a heart, an apple, sun, moon etc. We painted all of it for them.
CERTIFICATE DISTRIBUTION
After all the kids had been checked properly, the goodie bags had been distributed, every chils painted according to their demands, the president of our organisation started distributing certificates to all the volunteers, and appreciated the hard work that all of us had put in order to accomplish this feat.
The president of this organisation is a very close friend of mine. She has been with me through everything, since the very start, even though she's my senior but she's like an elder sister to me.
After the distribution of the certificates, the management of the school had assigned a room for all of us in which they offered us refreshments and lunch
THE KIDS OF GILGIT BALTISTAN
I have visited Gilgil Baltistan for the first time in my life and I don't meet the kids over there? Impossible. Do you know I used to hate kids a short time ago, but then I joined the healthcare industry and it made me fall in love with them. I'm not sure how, but yes that's the truth. I couldn't stand kids. Couldn't keep up with their bullshit but ever since I have had experience of treating kids in hospitals, it has made me a lot more compassionate towards them and infact I have started loving them.
Let's take a look at a lottttt of kids that I took pictures with.
EXPLORING THE BEAUTY OF HUNZA
We were done with the camp and the beauty of this place was irresistible. It was as if the mountains and the scenery were calling me towards them. As soon as I got free from the camp, my friend and I without informing anyone, left the school just to wander around in this unknown land of beauty. It was the most beautiful and the most relaxing time of my life.
The farms there had fresh fruits hung from the tree. We plucked out so many different types of fruits that I don't even remember their names, but some of them were cherries, bananas, apples etc.
There were cows and sheep there with whom I spent time. I fed a couple of cows apples and two my surprise they took it all in a single bite. I had no idea about ripe or unripe fruits so I took a bite of an apple, as soon as I did, a kid instructed me not to, as it will cause a lot of pain in my stomach.
There were dandelions over there that we played with. In short, I felt as if I were in heaven.
So that's it from my side. It was a life changing experience for me and I hope you would have enjoyed reading this blog. Meet you all soon. Till then take care byeee.
