Enjoying Chapman's Peak Drive

in #hive-163772yesterday

This post is for the #wednesdaywalk challenge and the #makemesmile challenge collaboration. This collaboration initially took place once a month, but due to its popularity, @tattoodjay (of the #wednesdaywalk) and @elizacheng (of #makemesmile) decided to make it a weekly thing.

If you want to know more about the rules, visit this week's post by @tattoodjay where you will find all the rules at the bottom of his post after you've enjoyed his beautiful photos from his walk.

Today I want to share more photos that I took during our visit to Cape Town during December 2024. These photo's were taken from the Chapman's Peak Drive Lookout Point.

Chapman's Peak is south of Cape Town, South Africa, heading out to the Cape Peninsula.

We travelled via Chapman's Peak Drive and decided to stop over at the Chapman's Peak Drive Lookout Point to get some shots of this beautiful area.

As to be expected, one of the first things I saw, was this frame where tourists can take photos of themselves, showing that they were there. These frames are found everywhere at lookout spots and beaches.

I had another idea in mind though. I thought it would be a good idea to "frame" Hout Bay, in the Background. Hout Bay is a suburb of Cape Town.

The word "hout" is the Afrikaans word for "wood". The Afrikaans word for "bay" is "baai" (pronounced like the English word "bye"). So the Afrikaans name for "Hout Bay" is "Hout Baai".

According to this information board, Southern Right Whales are winter visitors to this area. What a pity...we were there in mid-summer! What an experience it would be to spot some of these whales!

Looking down, I realized again how small we are! Below us, there was a private boat on the water. Look how incredibly small it appears against the massive ocean... It's like one tiny speck against these masses of water.

... And it's not even out in the wide open ocean...

If your eyes are good, you'll spot the same boat again in the next photo (a tiny white spec on the water below us).

Below us were some beautiful scenes of the coastline.

The views over Hout Bay are amazing. I cannot find words to describe it, so let the photos do the talking...

...and a last one with Hout Bay partially visible, but focusing on the mountain towering out above the ocean.

...and just focusing on the wonder of nature...

At the lookout point, there is a nice little picnic area as well. The trees in this area form a natural "frame" for Hout Bay in the background.

This tree also caught my attention.

Then we noticed another form of fun which is a big tourist attraction...Sidecar Adventures!

These guys take you out on various tours in and around Cape Town in their sidecars. The trips vary from 2-hour trips to a full day trip.

They pulled over for their guests to also enjoy the views from this lookout point.

It was fun to see them continue their journey after a while.

Then I heard it...

A helicopter! I could hear it was close and it was getting closer fast...

Then, as I turned around, it was heading straight toward us, with the mountain in background behind it.

It was a police helicopter patrolling the area. A welcome sight to see as it was passing over us.

Shortly after this, we left to continue our journey along Chapman's Peak Drive of which I will share more images shortly in another post.

So, this will be it for today, folks.

Thank you for reading my post! I do appreciate it!

The views of the immensity of the blue sea from the mountains are fabulous, it was an excellent walk surrounded by details that only nature can give us.
