There are places that must be experienced. Sometimes photos are not enough. But still, I will try to convey to you the beauty of the imposing Gardos tower located in Zemun - one of the most beautiful settlements in my city, Belgrade.
Saturday is the day for Zemun in my family, so we spent the day there yesterday. In addition to walking by the Danube river and visiting the open market, this time we went to Gardos Tower.
Zemun is a fishing and old settlement with a soul. Authentic buildings and colorful old houses make it so, as well as a quay by the river ideal for walks that make you feel very relaxed.
Gardos Tower is one of the most popular attractions and landmarks of Belgrade. It was built by the Hungarian rulers in 1896 and thereby marked the 1000 years of their statehood. That's why this tower is called the Millennium Tower, but also the Gardos Tower because it is located on the hill of the same name. At that time, the Hungarians built 4 towers on all 4 sides of the world at the furthest points of their kingdom, and of all of them, only the Gardos tower still exists.
Gardos tower is very high, even 36 meters. That's why it looks very impressive. It is built of bricks and stone and has a very interesting shape with beautiful elements. It is a masterpiece of architecture of that time.
Very often couples come to this place to take photos on their wedding day. Yesterday we found the bride and groom there. We had to wait for them to finish taking photos to enter the tower.
And my son couldn't wait to enter the tower. But he sat patiently with his sister while I went around the tower to photograph it from all sides. 😊 They sat under the walls of the old Zemun fortress, which dates back to the early Middle Ages.
Behind the tower, there are some nice spots to take photos because of the beautiful views around.
And finally, we entered the tower.
A circular staircase leads to the top of the tower. It was not an easy climb, especially if you are not physically fit. 😊
But it was worth the climb for the great views from the tower. From all sides of the tower, there are breathtaking views of the city and Danube river.
Next to the Gardos Tower is a restaurant where weddings are often held.
It was very interesting for my son to observe the surroundings from above. I've been here a few times before but my son hasn't so he was very excited.
Gardos Tower also has a basement and there are stories about mysterious tunnels that lead through the basement under the Danube to other fortresses of my city, such as the Kalemegdan fortress.
I love mysterious places and that's what always fascinated me the most when it comes to this tower. While it charms with its beauty, at the same time it awakens curiosity and imagination that inspire you to enjoy traveling through time.
Thank you very much for reading.
The images and writing are original and mine.
Greetings!
