The Fifth Avenue of the Playa Municipality in Havana, Cuba, is one of the most beautiful and extensive avenues in the country. Located in the municipality of Playa, it runs through several important neighbourhoods. From the beginning to almost the end, it is characterised by its wide central promenade that acts as a separator between its four paths.
This central separator is actually a walkway for passers-by, where people walk, walk their pets, exercise, or sit on the benches to enjoy the fresh air and the shade of the surrounding trees. Numerous trees adorn the avenue with palm and almond trees being the most abundant.
In the first half of the last century, the wealthy class and the bourgeoisie moved to this area. For this reason, beautiful mansions and buildings with spacious flats can be seen in the surrounding area, although the architecture of the area is varied and changes in each stretch of Fifth Avenue depending on the period in which each house was built.
There are also two roundabouts, one with a beautiful fountain and the other with the monument of the famous Cuban patriot Calixto García. The latter is located in front of the entrance to the bus station of the Municipality of Playa, on street 146. The sculpture has recently been relocated as it was previously located in front of the Havana Malecon, where it was very exposed to damage caused by saltpetre and the waves when the area was flooded due to climatic changes. Before its relocation it was restored, which makes it look much shinier now.
Very close to this monument there is a large area dedicated to recreation and physical exercise for the villagers. It is a facility with a large area where various sports are practiced
In addition, there are two small bridges that pass over the street, since this place is very close to the coast and underneath the avenue at different points, two rivers flow into the nearby sea waters. In this publication I show you the Quibú river, near its mouth which is located in Reparto Náutico.
It is a pity that the river is quite dirty and its waters are very polluted in some areas, since in some of the places where it passes there are houses and people use its waters as a dump where they throw waste and even the drains of the nearby houses pour into it. I imagine it in other times as a beautiful river with crystalline waters and surrounded by abundant and beautiful vegetation.
There are also several churches on this long road. One of them is the chapel that belonged to the old Catholic University of Villanueva, which has been restored a few years ago after being in a very bad constructive situation for a long time. It is now a beautiful church which I show you from a distance, with its cross on top.

La Quinta Avenida del Municipio Playa en la Habana, Cuba, es una de las más bellas y extensas que existen en el país. Ubicada en el municipio Playa, recorre varios barrios importantes. Desde el principio hasta casi el final la caracteriza su amplio paseo central, que actúa como separador entre sus cuatro sendas.
Este separador central es en realidad un paseo para transeúntes, en el que las personas caminan, pasean sus mascotas, hacen ejercicios, o suelen sentarse en los bancos a tomar el fresco y disfrutar de la sombra de los árboles que hay alrededor. Numerosos árboles adornan toda la avenida siendo las palmeras y los almendros los que más abundan.
En la primera mitad del siglo pasado, la clase adinerada y la burguesía se mudaron a esta zona. Por eso, en los alrededores se pueden ver bonitas casonas y edificios con amplios apartamentos, aunque la arquitectura del lugar es variada y cambia en cada tramo de la Quinta Avenida dependiendo de la época de construcción de cada vivienda.
Hay también dos rotondas, una con una hermosa fuente y otra con el monumento del insigne patriota cubano Calixto García. Esta se encuentra frente a la entrada del paradero para ómnibus del Municipio Playa, en la calle 146. La escultura ha sido recolocada recientemente ya que anteriormente estaba frente al Malecón habanero, donde estaba muy expuesta al daño provocado por el salitre y las olas cuando por algún cambio climático inundaban la zona. Antes de su reubicación fue restaurada, lo que la hace lucir ahora mucho más reluciente.
Muy cercano a este monumento hay una gran área dedicada a la recreación y el ejercicio físico de los pobladores. Es una instalación con un amplio terreno donde se practican varios deportes.
Además, hay dos pequeños puentes que pasan sobre la calle, ya que este lugar está muy cercano a la costa y por debajo de la avenida en distintos puntos, circulan dos ríos que desembocan en las aguas del mar cercanas. En esta publicación les muestro el río Quibú, cerca de su desembocadura la que se encuentra en el Reparto Náutico.
Es una pena que el río se encuentre bastante sucio y sus aguas muy contaminadas en algunas zonas, ya que en algunos de los lugares por donde pasa hay viviendas y las personas usan sus aguas como vertedero donde echan desechos e incluso los desagües de las casas cercanas vierten en él. Me lo imagino en otros tiempos como un río hermoso de aguas cristalinas y rodeado de abundante y hermosa vegetación.
En esta extensa vía hay también varias iglesias. Una de ellas es la capilla que pertenecía a la antigua Universidad Católica de Villanueva, la cual ha sido restaurada hace pocos años después de estar mucho tiempo en muy mala situación constructiva. Ahora es una bonita iglesia que les muestro desde la distancia, con su cruz en lo alto.
La Quinta Avenida de la Ciudad de la Habana tiene muchas cosas interesantes y bonitas en sus alrededores. Este ha sido solo un pequeño recorrido. Espero que les haya guste y disfrutado el paseo.
