Revisiting places has, for those of us who are always sensitive to appreciating and finding the sublime in small things, the same magic as rereading a book: there is always an "other" reading that complements the previous one.
Revisitar los sitios tiene, para los que siempre andamos con la sensibilidad de apreciar y encontrar lo sublime en las pequeñas cosas, la misma magia que releer un libro: siempre hay una lectura "otra" que complementa la anterior.
A few years ago I visited the Morro Cabañas in Havana for the first time. Then, year after year that I have been invited to the International Book Fair, I have walked through some of its facilities, but, certainly, I have never rested in all its parts. It is a pending account. But, I feel that the site is so anthropized, so little protected from history, from the monumental, from the heritage, from the museum, that the urban that encloses it swallows the magic of the rest. Maybe that demotivates me. In fact, I don't even know if it has any museum rooms.
Hace ya unos cuantos años visité por primera vez el Morro Cabañas de La Habana. Luego, año tras año que he sido invitada a la Feria Internacional del Libro, he caminado algunas de sus instalaciones, pero, ciertamente, nunca he desansado todos sus lares. Es una cuenta pendiente. Pero, siento que está tan antropizado el sitio, tan poco resguardado a la historia, a lo monumental, al patrimonio, a lo museístico, que lo urbano que lo encierra se traga la magia del resto. Quizás eso me desmotive. De hecho, desconozco hasta si tenga algunas salas museos.
Of course, the view from the surroundings is really beautiful. I don't think that any of the previous times I had thought to take photos and fully enjoy the site like I did now.
Eso sí, la vista desde los alrededores es realmente hermosa. Creo que ninguna de las veces anteriores había reparado a tomar fotos y disfrutar del sitio a plenitud como hice ahora.
A little history
Un poco de historia
Well, first mention that the full name of the facility is Morro Cabaña Military Historical Park. It is made up of two ruins, one belonging to the Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro, the most emblematic of the Cuban fortresses, which was started in 1630 by the Italian military engineer Juan Bautista Antonelli, and the fortress of San Carlos de la Cabin named in honor of King Charles III, being the largest of the military installations created by Spain in America in 1774, cataloged at that time as the crowning work of the bastioned defensive system. Hence the popular name of Morro Cabañas is combined, in honor of both previous constructions.
Bueno, primero mencionar que el nombre completo de la instalación es Parque Histórico Militar Morro Cabaña. Se encuentra conformado por dos ruinas, una perteneciente al Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro, la más emblemática de las fortalezas cubanas, la cual fue iniciada en 1630 a cargo del ingeniero militar italiano Juan Bautista Antonelli, y la fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña llamada así en honor al rey Carlos III, siendo la mayor de las instalaciones militares creadas por España en América en 1774, catalogada en aquel momento como la obra cumbre del sistema defensivo abaluartado. De ahí que se conjugue el nombre popular de Morro Cabañas, en honor a ambas construcciones precedentes.
On this trip I became convinced that visiting it means establishing direct contact with history, a history rich in legends, it is jumping in time and traveling to the distant and romantic era of corsairs and pirates, admiring from the ancient and solid walls the city, climb the lighthouse and capture the most beautiful images of Havana as a memory, sit in mute contemplation under the whisper of the waves to enjoy the most beautiful sunsets on the Balcón de la Reina, walk through the narrow streets cobbled, admiring each stone, each nook, each secluded and evocative square, silent testimonies of the past. It means letting your imagination fly and creating your own adventure. It is, living the past from the present.
En este viaje me convencí de que visitarlo significa establecer un contacto directo con la historia, una historia rica en leyendas, es saltar en el tiempo y trasladarse a la época lejana y romántica de los corsarios y los piratas, admirar desde los vetustos y sólidos muros la ciudad, subir al faro y captar para el recuerdo las más bellas imágenes de La Habana, sentarse, en muda contemplación bajo el susurro de las olas a disfrutar las más hermosas puestas de sol en el Balcón de la Reina, caminar por las estrechas calles adoquinadas, admirando cada piedra, cada recodo, cada plazoleta recoleta y evocadora, mudos testimonios del pasado. Es dejar volar la imaginación y tejer cada cual una propia aventura. Es, vivir el pasado desde el presente.
