Date : 11 MARCH 2023
The Photographs in this post are taken with my #CANONR5 📸 and just a few with my #iPhone.
I will follow the time stamps on them. So it looks like you are experiencing my #adventures on this #walk to 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻 #discover everything what I saw, like the little #details seen through my eyes.
Location of the waterfall we find on the following screenshots of Google Maps, a car parking area is just next to the road.
Zooming out we see that the waterfall is very close to the Kylesku bridge that is just a little further north along the A894 road.
More information about the waterfall you find in the following website: Scotlandsfinest - Wailing Widow Falls!
Let me take you first on our adventure to search for the “WAILING WIDOW FALLS” or also known as the ALLT CHRANAID waterfall 😊
We parked the car just off the road safely in the snow, not to hinder the road. We wrapped up very well. At home we had layered up already with some woollen layers of clothes. Scarfs 🧣 and gloves 🧤 some hats couldn’t miss either next to a proper winter jacket. We are all set…
Here we go 😊
The view next to the car:
Along the road looking left. It was very windy this day and there were wind gusts 💨 that made it feel much colder 🥶 even though the sun was shining it was cold.
Next to the car looking up at the rock facade I notice icicles 🥶
I capture some closer ups of them for you.
I like the details of what mother nature can show us even in the winter months. ❄️
Looking out into the distance we see everything is covered with snow. A truly beautiful landscape 🥰 The road we came along looks so little…
We look in the direction of the waterfall. We can not see it, just the river running off from it. On google maps we saw it is a hike to get there.
We decided to go on the left side of the river, carefully climbing over the rocks 🪨 that are just covered by the snow.
A cute little #tree 🌳next to us and the #river.
Closer look of this tree… its branches covered by snow ❄️
As we walk further we enter the area with no sun ☀️ light now. Looking into the distance we still see no sign of the waterfall.
I capture this spot in portrait… it is starting to get very cold now the sun doesn’t warm us anymore.
Looking up at the rock’s edge… we are in some sort of ravine. We see the wind gusts 💨 are blowing the snow along the edge…. Bbbrrrrrr 🥶
We don’t want to give up yet and continue our walk in search of the waterfall.
I am ahead of hubby… I try to look for the waterfall but suddenly my cheeks are starting to freeze, even though I am fully wrapped up with the scarf 🧣 only my eyes are visible.
A few more steps… my lips are starting to hurt. 😱 I call out to hubby and tell him we shouldn't go further. I can’t see the waterfall, it is not wise in these weather conditions to continue this walk along the river. He catches up and agrees.
I look back at the track and river we came from. If you look closely next to the river you see our tracks in the snow.
The waterfall looks so close by on the map, but it isn’t as the terrain next to the river over the rocks is rather tricky and makes us only hike slowly. The water and the shade in this ravine… the cold rock facade next to us and the wind howling around us makes it impossible to continue. 😔 So we give up and return to the car. Better safe than sorry.
I capture the water flow of the river while we walk back.
Our view coming out of the ravine, crevice…
Beautiful details on the mountain tops 🏔️
We warm up a bit in the car, before we head further to the bridge. It is just “around the corner” so to speak 😊
Location of the bridge we find on the following screenshots of Google Maps :
Its location in the North Western part of the #HIGHLANDS.
More information about this stunning bridge we find on the following websites:
Wikipedia page about the Kylesku bridge!
On undiscovered Scotland we find the following page with more information about: The bridge!
Scotland off the beaten track has : This information for you.
Do read about the #construction that took place in 1981 - 1983 it was opened to the public in 1984. This bridge even made it to be classified by the Historic Environment of Scotland as a “Category A structure”. See the Wikipedia website as source above 👆🏻.
Let’s check out this BEAUTIFUL BRIDGE, we have warmed up enough to go outside again. We parked our car on the large parking area just before the bridge.
Hubby takes this photo with his phone from “moi” 👋🏻
We walk to the viewing area and I capture some photographs. We see the legs of the bridge… the #architecture of this bridge is stunning!
Looking underneath along the river.
The dark blue colour of the water is so in harmony with the cool colours of the snow. ❄️
I focus on the concrete parts of the bridge. The #curve over the river. So beautifully shaped.
Our view towards the right.
We turn around and look up.
Fascinating construction. I like its details.
Walking a bit further away along a path that leads up an elevated area, we look at the bridge… its beginning on the left.
We find here an information sign with more information how they exchanged the bridge for a ferry service that once was in this location.
It is not a large bridge but beautifully built.
The concrete connections work well. Very innovative of that time.
Across the water.
I reached the top of the little hill next to the parking area. If you look closely you can find our car and see the size of the bridge and surrounding mountains. 🏔️
Zooming in a bit more, look at all the layers! WOW 🤩 Even a little picnic bench is on the parking area.
Hahaha I had to capture this lonely plant 🌱 sticking out the snow ❄️
We jump in our car and drive across the bridge. There is another parking spot on the other side of the bridge.
We get out and see a little snowman ⛄️
Our views towards in the distance… 😊
We look closer… so beautiful 🤩
Zooming out further. What a stunning location!
It is a shame many people miss this area when they drive through the western HIGHLANDS of Scotland 🏴
I hope that I could convince you to check it out when you would find yourself ever in this area to go and check out the waterfall… preferably in the spring and summer hahaha
The bridge at any time during the year. 😊
