On one of my last trips in Querétaro, I was able to visit the center of a small town called Amealco de Bonfil.
We had not really planned to visit it because our goal was to get to an ecotourism center where we would spend the night in tents, but as the town was on our way we decided to stop and take some pictures of the church and its surroundings.
Amealco is a town surrounded by nature, since it is located in a wooded area of the state.
It is an ideal place for hiking, mountain biking, has very beautiful places for camping, in short you can do many ecotourism activities.
The majority of its population is of Otomí roots, which is reflected in its traditions and gastronomy.
They are very religious people, coincidentally when we were passing through the town they were finishing a midday mass, so you see a lot of people around the church.
The Parroquia de Santa Maria is the iconic monument of the town, everyone wants to be photographed with this church in the background.
One of the curious things about this town is the origin of its rag dolls, which are very famous in the country, and are made by the Otomí women of the town.
They were originally created to protect children from evil spirits and were made in different sizes according to the age of the child.
They are so famous that a doll fair has been created and is held every year in November. They also have their own Museo de la Muñeca Artesanal which I could not visit by the way since I found out it existed when we left the town.
So when you see one of these dolls do not forget where they come from.
Although I am no longer living in Mexico, I still have many trips to share from that beautiful country. See you guys next time! 🤗
