A wander around Leicester City

in #hive-1637723 years ago

If you're looking for a UK city that's somewhat intimate enough to explore on foot, yet big enough to discover new avenues and back street alleys, Leicester City in the East Midlands is the ideal place to visit.

I was stationed in Leicester for an extended period on the canals, and the weather was clement so I decided to go for a wander around the old town of Leicester.

As I turned the corner from the High Street, I spotted a limo, and instantly I knew that love was in the air, as I have a great adoration for vintage cars. I also guessed that there might have been the joining of two souls in progression, who was about to take a ride as Mr & Mrs for the first time.
The scene was serene and I could not resist stopping to get a few shots, especially since I was on nothing but an aimless wander.

I headed off as the limo and bridal party drove away, but Leicester is a small town, so it was no surprise that I kept seeing them on all the little side streets surrounding the town centre.

I've roamed the streets of Leicester on numerous occasions, yet I'm always mesmerized by the old buildings that give the city so much character.

I try to see as many of the old streets and buildings around Leicester, as there are excessive sightings of scaffolding everywhere. This is an indication that change is coming, or that some renovation of buildings is in progress.

I always feel charmed when I walk down old streets. I imagine all the history and different generations that have been down the same roads. I sometimes wonder how would my story fit into theirs.
Is that such a weird thing?

Do you ever look at old houses or old buildings and wonder how many different lives have shared a part of them?

I do, and I also imagine how different construction was in those olden days and the adversities the workers might have faced to achieve all in the intricate designs and details.
Unfortunately, Leicester is a booming city with large universities, and knocking down the older structure and replacing them with modern student accommodation is a prevalent practice so I try my best to freeze these memories in time.

Leicester City has a gritty vibe to it, and in the town centre you'll notice an eclectic mix of people, and there is an edge to it that urges you on to explore.
There are many departmental shops and a huge shopping mall with a buzzing crowd.

Many boaters like to pop into the town to the Leicester Market because it's a vibrant market that's open every day. Leicester held the record for the largest covered market in Europe, but unfortunately, things and times have changed and so has the market. There's still a wide range of haberdashery, gadgets, household items, and fruit and veg vendors, who have got to be some of the most jovial and hilarious bunch on the planet.

Vendors say the most comical things to entice customers to buy their cheap discount bowls, and vendors are jolly but prefer if customers do not attempt to switch goods around that have already been weighed and displayed.

As I roamed the streets popping in and out of shops, I made time for people-watching, as it's always a highlight of my time around the city.

Leicester is a cafe central with a wide array of cuisines to choose from, with al fresco dining all around. There are charming tea houses, coffee shops, pubs, and restaurants for every clientele.

I love old cobbled streets

There's even some gaudiness... Hmmm, I wonder what takes place inside?

Two to three hours of roaming and stopping for a quick meal is a great way to pass time and see a section of the UK that holds much history, personality, and some mystery.

I hope you've found this little city as fascinating as I will eternally be about it. I spend my days nipping in an out, and I am always buzzing with excitement to do so:)))

Thanks for stopping by!

if i could come to this old city, it seems i would be walking aimlessly every day. In my city, there are several buildings of former British colonial companies in the 18th and 19th centuries and are very similar to some of the buildings in this old city of Leicester.

I think you would too. It's the perfect place for it, and the mixture of cuisine and outlets are amazing. You'd be blown away by all the history. I haven't even begun to explore that part.
Yes, I can imagine just how gorgeous the buildings of Indonesian are, especially from the Dutch influences too:-)))

Thank you so much @claudio83 and @tipu. I appreciate this very much :-)))

Wow, a very early post from you! Either you go to sleep or woke up just before sunrise! 😂

I know that Leicester is a university city and there are many young people from Bulgaria that choose to study there, but I really wasn’t aware that this city had such a nice and preserved old city. The buildings are really telling stories! And yes, it’s very interesting what people did actually live there. They most probably were some high class aristocrats. I don’t think the poor lived in buildings like these.

a very early post from you! Either you go to sleep or woke up just before sunrise! 😂

Oh, you noticed!🙃 Sadly, I had some wine (which I have been off for some weeks) and it affected my ability to sleep. Honestly, I don't have a camera a the moment and I wasn't able to capture the structures with the precision that I would have preferred... but they are some amazing structures. I was heading to an appointment the other morning and I walked on one of the most charming streets there could ever me (well, it was Castle Street outside the Castle area) and yes, it had to be only aristocrats who would have resided and probably walked those areas. I haven't done photos of that side yet, but I think I'll do it when I get my camera back.

Leicester is an amazing city. I am disappointed that the market is not as buzzing as it always was, and sections of it is closed.

I feel at home in Leicester, always:)))

I will check your coffee post soon 😊

Of course I noticed, after all we have discussed our sleeping habits just recently. 😁

I hope that you got used with wine and will go back to your sleeping habits pretty quick, if you haven’t done it yet.

Leicester really seems like an amazing city and although you didn’t have a camera with you, the photos still tell a lot and I can see the spirit of the place.

Hehe! Yeah, I'm doing better with the wine now. However, the sleep - I'm still up late. Just have no urge to sleep early, but once I get in bed, I'm out. We tend to lie in at the moment... this will change once we start traveling again though:)

That is a great looking car. It's really cool seeing vintage and classic cars like that.

Leicester looks like a cool city. I do love a good old town.

Do you ever look at old houses or old buildings and wonder how many different lives have shared a part of them?

I don't think I've ever thought of that really but it's interesting to ponder. I'm sure I will going forward.

Yes, I have a vintage and classic car fetish. I could have spent hours exploring every nook and cranny of it. They don't make cars (or buildings) the same any more.
#IwasBornInTheWrongEra :-)))

No they certainly don't, unfortunately.

If I were a billionaire, classic cars would be the one area I would struggle to be a minimalist.😁

Haha fair enough. 😂

😊😁

Just love that clocktower. How unique.

Yeah, that's true. I've always liked that clocktower too, and I even have more appreciation for it now that I've explored so many other Uk towns:)))

I see your love for architecture in these pictures

Yes, I was disappointed that I did not have my proper camera to take better photos. It's something I'll do on my next trip to Leicester for my personal collection:)

The city looks grand! Are you sure it is East Midlands?! 😄 I feel the vibe of Oxford/Stratford upon Avon, so much character! I feel like I should visit it now 👍

Haha! You are so right to ask if it's East Midlands.
I need to dedicate an entire day to photography for my portfolio when my camera is repaired.
There are some charming corners of Leicester that I seldom wander, and you would believe it's Oxford indeed. Stratford upon Avon is one of my favourite cities.
Leicester is a gem, and I realise that more each time I visit other cities and towns.

You should visit. The centre itself has lost many department stores, but the side streets are filled with amazing things to discover:)))

It is such a nice photo and the car is something that caught my eyes.

Thank you:)
Yes, the car caught my FULL attention 😁😍, it was supposed to be the cover photo, but that photo didn't show when I published the post.
I'll try to edit and see if it will show now;) lol

Hahaha, I was like imagining the 60's kind of era when I saw it. It is so vintage. 🤗

Yeah, I absolutely love it. 😍

A truly beautiful location, created for filming a movie.
I laughed at that clown act and immediately imagined those celebrity look-alikes dancing, I guess for some money.

Haha! Yes, there are different kinds of acts for money, and some pretty decent singers busking too ...

However, there's a lady who stands by the clocktower with a microphone and all she says is "🎤 Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna 🎼 ALL DAY LONG, EVERY DAY, BY HERSELF in a monotone voice.
The sound is loud, but it's like she's invisible, because I have never seen anyone acknowledge her.
That's a special kind of loyalty.
I do hope she's happy, and not in misery!
