Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

CASA GRANDE (SOLAR DA FAMÍLIA MARROCOS).jpg

Idanha came up on our itinerary because we wanted to show our girl where the Boomfestival was taking place. Before we got there we saw the sign for Idanha-a-velha and went to reconnoitre. After exploring the outside of the wall we went inside.
The North Gate is one of the most important landmarks in Idanha-a-Velha.
In the era of the Roman Empire, the city, known as Civitas Igaeditanorum, was surrounded by a wall approximately 750 meters long and seven defense towers.

As space was limited within the walls, some structures (such as the baths) were built outside the limits.
Centuries passed, the Roman wall and its towers were modified and reused by various cultures such as Muslims and the Knights Templar, who recognized its strategic value.
The North Gate was crucial for the city, serving as the entrance to the Roman road that connected Mérida to Braga, being central to trade and communication with other important cities on the Iberian Peninsula.

A visit to Porta Norte in Idanha-a-Velha allows you to imagine the historical movement of the place, which was influenced by different civilizations over time.
As soon as we arrived here we immediately saw the Chapel of São Sebastião. Dating from the 17th century, it was adapted to the Lapidar Igeditano Museum in the 20th century. Today we only see ruins awaiting intervention.

From there we continued to the Varas mill, which was built in the 19th century and an important symbol of the Industrial Revolution.
Olive oil has always been one of the region's main agricultural products, and the construction of this mill by the Morocco family allowed the large-scale production of this valuable oil.
The mill consisted of three rooms: the grinding room, the pressing room and the bagac room, in addition, there were two haystacks that served as shelter for the workers and animals involved in production.

After extensive rehabilitation, the Lagar de Varas reopened in 2008 and became the Idanha-a-Velha Museum Complex and Tourist Office.
The Morocco family was very rich, exerting great influence in the region and during the 19th and 20th centuries, when Idanha-a-Velha depended mainly on livestock and agriculture, the family owned vast agricultural properties.
Around the middle of the 20th century, António Morocco commissioned the construction of the Solar da Família Morocco, planned as the largest country mansion in the region. However, the building was never finished and quickly deteriorated. Currently, Casa Grande, even degraded and abandoned, continues to be a testimony to the history of the Morocco family and the social and economic changes in Idanha-a-Velha over time.

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health
