Ovar - Costa Baixa / City Center Part I - Riding Portugal

in #hive-1637724 months ago
Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

PART I.jpg

I am lucky (or also unlucky) to have family spread across Portugal and the world. One of these days I told my husband that he really liked going to Ovar. I spent many summer holidays here. I know that it was here that I learned to skate (at Furadouro), that I watched the film I like most (DIRTY DANCING) non-stop and that I seriously celebrated Carnival. I'm lucky to have a cousin my age who allowed me to have a lot of fun as a child.

Of playing with earth and water and making mud cakes. Of getting three changes of clothes dirty in a row and my cousin (the oldest) not scolding me. Of being afraid of going up the stairs to the attic and playing on the terrace, of my cousin (the youngest) wearing a huge brace on her face to straighten her teeth and of me being afraid of sleeping with her... Of being happy these days and not know.
Life is fleeting and one day (I must have been twelve or thirteen years old) we received a call saying that my cousin had not survived a heart attack... Mother and daughter (my age) were both my cousins, but I saw the oldest as my aunt. I wrote many letters to my cousin (at the time there was no cell phone) and as soon as I could we were together. I lost my father when I was 24.... It was the hardest blow of my life, so I don't know how she dealt with it so soon... We then headed towards this city.

Everything at this point seems smaller to me... In other words, the city that once seemed so big and that I walked around every day, today seems like everything is just a short distance away.
We parked the car in the center, in Jardim dos Campos right next to Capela das Almas where I took my first and only procession after the first communion and ended up returning home barefoot on a tractor.
Ovar is well known for its sponge cake but also for the tiles that are very present both on the facades of houses and churches and chapels.

Tudo nesta altura me parece mais pequeno...

We continued on foot to Praça da República. Here we find the Town Hall. The square is quite different from what I remember, with the floor full of tiles and the Church of Santo António in the background.
From here I knew the way to my aunt's house with my eyes closed... My dear aunt Alice, the only one who knew how to make white rice (without onions) and which I ate, the one who cheered me on for Easter with a boiled egg in the quite. Who took us to his sister's house to make Ovar's sponge cake during the holidays and who I hadn't seen for at least fifteen years despite talking on the phone...

Before getting there I noticed a chapel right in front of the City Hall that I don't remember ever seeing. Veronica Chapel and Pass.
From here we went on to a very special reunion, which made my heart happy! We knocked on the door and only after a brief explanation did my aunt, who was in her nineties, realize who I was. She met our daughter and my husband and I felt peace in my heart. It was a good day :-)

PT

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health

Those are some beautiful buildings! It's amazing that your aunt, who is in her 90s, got to see you and meet your daughter and husband. My wife and I are hoping to do something similar by visiting Taiwan, where she used to visit often, to see her family. Her grandmother, who is in her mid-90s, hasn't had the chance to meet our two sons yet.

Hello @bostonadventures! At first she did not recognized me. When she did she started to laugh and cry at the same time. It was special to be able to see her, since it was a few years since the last time :-) I hope that you and your wife can do the same soon. Thank you for stopping by 😊

I hope so. My wife's grandmother is suffering from Alzheimer's. She constantly asks her daughter if she is married yet.

Ohhh :-( My grandfather suffered from Parkinson and I know it's sad! Wish you and your family all the best 🤞

I have a similar place where I used to go with my family over and over again. So no matter how much I travel and how many places I see, that specific location will always have a special spot in my heart.
