Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

The trip back home is always more expensive. On the way back to the north we decided to change the route and take the opportunity to explore Castro Verde, a village located in the heart of Alentejo. The temperatures were still summer and we had to cool off a little first.

When we arrived, the first thing that caught our attention was its simplicity. Alentejo is full of white villages and centuries-old churches, and gives us the tranquility of a slower time, and Castro Verde is no exception.

We stopped the car right at the foot of the Royal Basilica of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, an imposing baroque monument, built in honor of the Battle of Ourique, which, according to legend, took place nearby in 1139. They say that it was here that D . Afonso Henriques defeated the Moors, being proclaimed king of Portugal. Its interior is decorated with tile panels that tell the story of the battle, with a combination of art and history.

We then went for a walk through the streets of Castro Verde! We stopped at a small cafe to drink cold water and ice cream, enjoying the terrace of a small square, while watching the locals chatting in the shade of the trees.

Castro Verde is known for its Biosphere Reserve, which protects and cares for one of the last great steppes in Europe, a small paradise for bird watchers.
We didn't explore this part because we didn't have time and to be honest I don't know much about birds :-)

Along the way we found a landmark that is already familiar to us and that one day, if possible, we will visit them all. I'm talking about the National 2 milestone.
The itinerary, as I said here, starts in the North of Portugal in Chaves (where we have already been) and ends in Faro!

This small detour allowed us to get to know a little more about our Portugal and I'm glad we made that decision.

PT

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health
