Visit Portugal - guindais.png

On the morning of June 23, the day before the São João party, I decided to walk on a journey that had been on my mind for quite some time, a walk up the Guindais Stairs in Porto.

The Guindais Stairs, or Escadas dos Guindais are an iconic set of steps that connect the lower Ribeira district with the upper area of Batalha. This steep, narrow staircase is not just a path but a window into the city rich history and culture.

As the first rays of sunlight pierced through the sky, I found myself at the foot of the Guindais Stairs. Porto mornings have a unique charm, especially on a sunny day!

I chose this early hour to avoid the midday heat and to experience the city waking up. Porto is known for its hills and stairs, and the Guindais Stairs are among the most famous. Built in the 12 century, they have been a vital passageway for centuries.

June 23 is a special day in Porto. It's the eve of São João, one of the city most beloved parties. As I began my ascent, the preparations for the night festivities were already underway.

The São João is known for its lively atmosphere, marked by fireworks, music, and traditional dishes like grilled sardines. As I climbed higher, I could see the banners and bunting fluttering in the breeze. The streets were coming alive with vibrant colours.

One of the most enchanting aspects of my walk was the music that accompanied me. As I climbed the stairs, I could hear melodies drifting from the houses that lined the steps.

The Guindais Stairs themselves are a sight to behold. Steep and narrow, they wind their way up the hillside, offering stunning views of Porto. The steps are made of stone, worn smooth by centuries of use. As I climbed, I amazed at the intricate details of the buildings that flanked the stairs.

Standing at the top, I took a moment to catch my breath and soak in the view. The sense of accomplishment was immense.

Íngremes e estreitas, elas sobem a encosta, oferecendo vistas deslumbrantes do Porto.

While the climb up the Guindais Stairs was exhilarating, the descent was equally memorable.

The stairs had offered a unique perspective on Porto, revealing the city layers of history and culture. Each step had been a passage through time, from the medieval architecture to the contemporary party preparations.
