English Version

Greetings friends and members of the community. Among the jewels of colonial architecture in Cuba that are a symbol of the Cuban nation and Havana is the great Fortress of San Carlos de La Cabaña. This great military fortress is the largest built by the Spanish empire in the Americas, and because of its great historical and patrimonial values it is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

La Cabaña Fortress, as it is also known, was built in the 18th century, on top of the heights of the coastal cliff located on the eastern margin of the entrance to Havana Bay at more than 30 meters above sea level, an ideal site for the establishment of the architectural system at the entrance of the city. Its construction followed the events of the capture of the Morro Castle by the English, being necessary the location of this fortification to defend Havana from enemy attacks and incursions, being completed in 1774.

The fortress is named in honor of the Spanish king of the time Carlos III, and its construction was directed by the military engineer Silvestre Albarca. The commissioning of this work by the king occurred immediately after the events of the taking of El Morro, thus establishing what would become the largest military fortress in America at that time.

This architectural complex has walls located in its extreme bastions, with notable moats; and a central bastion where the great entrance door is located, with decorated attached columns. In the interior it has a wide central square, with bastions, barracks and entrances, and a complex system of cannons and military artillery that today can be appreciated as vestiges of the defensive activity at the time.

Today this space, after being restored in 1989, is part of the Morro-Cabaña Military Historical Park complex, being a museum and also the venue of important events and traditions such as the annual International Book Fairs in Havana and the traditional Nine O'clock Gun Salute. All this makes the San Carlos de La Cabaña Fortress an excellent place to visit and interact with history in the present.

I hope you have enjoyed and found this place interesting. Best regards to all.
