Visiting the zoo with my little one is always fun and exciting. This time we heard that there was a new addition, a Tiger. We were too eager to explore the zoo and visit the kid's park inside it. And got a bonus fanning peacock!
Rangpur Zoo is one of the largest in Bangladesh. The zoo is an enclosure for the animals and birds and a recreational center for the locals. The area is huge with lots of trees and greenery. And there's a kid's park inside with different rides.
Let me show you around.
With an area of 21.51 acres, this zoo was established in 1991. I can't tell you how many times I have visited this place since my childhood as it's close to my hometown. I used to go with my parents and now taking my son with me!
We went straight to the tiger enclosed to see this beauty. There were a few tigers before but they became old. The zoo authority added this new member as seems like it has a lot of energy. It was interacting and trying to frighten the visitor with its roar.
Good to see that they gave it a large enclosed to explore a little.
We spent most of the time in front of the bird's enclosure. It was a rainy day and there were only a few visitors. So we were able to observe the birds chirping and their activities closely.
There were more than 50 types of animals. Not all of them are from this region. So keeping them in this new environment is a challenge for sure. Many of the animals already die because of probably mistreatment and lack of care.
Here comes the major attraction of the day, the peacock.
There were a few in the cages and seems like they were having a good time. We spent quite a few minutes in front of the enclosure and got to see the whole fanning process.
My son was astonished and we too were too excited to witness this.
My son was astonished and so as we to witness the marvel of nature. Some even came so close to us in search of food, that we could see the wonder of color in their feathers. But as giving them food is prohibited (still some people do that though) we refused to do so.
To be honest, I don't like the idea of keeping animals and birds in enclosures for entertainment purposes. Rather they should be focusing on animal welfare and conservation. The zoo should be a place to 'encounter' with the animals and see the beauty of nature.
This zoo authority took some initiative to improve the environment to come out from the age-old concept of animals being displayed for entertainment. I hope they will do that for the sake of the animals and birds.
With these thoughts in mind, we spent a nice day out there if I say honestly. Seeing my son exploring by himself and trying to interact with the animals politely gave me a pleasant feeling.
