Milan Cathedral

Hello everyone!

It's time to present the main attraction I wanted to see while in Milan. Cathedral of the Birth of St. Mary in Milan is one of the largest and most recognizable churches in the world. According to the technical data, the building is 158.5 m long, 93 m wide and 108.5 m high (the tower with the statue of "La Madonnina"). The construction of this temple began in 1386 by Prince Gian Galeazzo Visconti, and was completed almost 600 years later in the 20th century (the last portal opened in 1965).

Witam wszystkich!

The first look at the cathedral from Via Carlo Maria Martini (i.e. from the eastern side) is stunning. The cathedral is built of marble in the Gothic style with elements of classicism and neo-Gothic.

In this shot you can see the highest tower and the statue of the Virgin Mary ("La Madonnina").

View of the main facade from the west side from the "Piazza del Duomo" square. As you can see in the photos, a lot of people come to see the Cathedral.

There are five entrances here:

  • Gate of the Edict of Constantine,
  • Sant'Ambrogio Gate,
  • Mary's Gate (largest central door),
  • Gate of the Battle of Legnano,
  • The Cathedral's History Door.

Znajduje się tutaj pięć wejść:

  • Brama Edyktu Konstantyna,
  • Brama Sant'Ambrogio,
  • Brama Maryi (największe centralne drzwi),
  • Brama bitwy pod Legnano,
  • Drzwi Historii Katedry.

Due to limited time and a very long queue for entrance tickets, we limited ourselves only to admiring this wonderful building from the outside. Therefore, a good solution is to buy tickets online in advance. In addition to entering the cathedral itself, you can also enter its underground and roof.

Below are shots showing some of the sculptures on the cathedral's western façade. Apparently there are 3,400 of them in total, including 2,300 outside. Therefore, you need to devote a lot of time to watch them all. You can also see why it took so long to build.

After seeing the cathedrals in Prague and Milan, I still had to see the Sagrada Família in Barcelona. For me, these are the three churches that impress me the most with their architecture.
