Let's Climb the Sella del Diavolo | Sardinia Island

in #hive-16377211 months ago

Today, I will take you with me to the Sella del Diavolo, which means '' The saddle of the devil''. You can find this place just outside of Cagliari, Sardinia. Even though it is so near the city, the vegetation makes it feel wild, just what I like, and the view over the ocean looks even more stunning!

Let's Climb the Sella del Diavolo, A stunning hike on Sardinia Island

It was today a beautiful December day, around 20 degrees Celsius so I was already happy when I started the hike to the top of the Sella del Diavolo. It was a nice walk, just 30 minutes walking over a rocky path which is easy enough to walk. It isn't very steep. just a gentle walk. People who are old or in a bad condition might disagree.

The ground is very rocky and I believe not all plants can grow there. For a Local Sardinian, the plants and vegetation might be ordinary since most plants are very common here, but for someone like me, from northern Europe, it feels like a totally different experience seeing so many new plants. I love all those cactuses, Seriously, I love them! There were not that many cactuses here as in many other Sardinian places, but I still took a picture of every cactus I saw. I just love to see them.

Did I already tell you I love cactuses?

Have you seen those types of plants before where you are from?

Here you can see how near this place is to the city, even though it feels like a place in the middle of nowhere

Along the way you can find these two damaged towers which you can see in the picture above. They are surrounded by more strange plants. I am doubting if I have ever seen this type of plants before here in Sardinia.

As I mentioned before, they call this place the Devil's Saddle. The rocks are shaped just like a Saddle. An old Legend tells that Lucifer, the devil, wanted to seize this part of Sardinia. God sent his angels to prevent this from happening and they battled above in the heavens. The angels won and when the devil fell down from the sky, the rock got its shape. At least, that is what they say. The coast here is now called the coast of the Angels.

The Sella del Diavolo. I believe a photograph taken more from the side would have shown the saddle shaped rock better

And the most stunning part in my opinion has yet to come, the beautiful view over the sea here! No wonder that the Devil was obsessed with it! I guess the devil and I have something in common! This part of Sardinia is just so beautiful! The water is so clear and blue, and the rocks underwater make it even more plesant to look at. I sat down for a while and felt extremely thankful to be here. I fell in love with the place but also in love with life. And I am not even on holiday. This is reality!

This is also a popular spot to go kayaking I noticed. I felt like I wanted to go down to the water but there was no path as far as I could see. It seems like the perfect place to go kayaking and enjoy a private beach. I just checked and the sea temperature is today, 11-12-2023 still 16,9 degrees which is decent for a short swim

I parked my car at the start of the trail at a parking spot I found on Park4Night (#330228 for the camperfolks among us), There are no services, just a good view! so everything I need I would say. It is an amazing spot for the night for the Vanlifers among us

Thank you for reading my blog! Are you ready to plan your trip to Sardinia already or are you not yet convinced? I still have plenty of stories about Sardinia to share so if you aren't convinced yet, follow my page and let me try!

wow, what a truly amazing sea view

I love this kind of places that have a name based on their look which makes legends even more believable. But despite its interesting name, the view up there is fantastic!!

This is really a beautiful view of the sea worth admiring of I must confess

Wahou ! The way you described the vegetation and the historical significance of the place really transported me there. It's moments like these that make us fall in love with traveling and exploring new horizons.

Thank you for sharing this inspiring post. I'm definitely following for more stories about your Sardinian adventures 👏

I always like the way you manage to pay attention to every detail you have around you, many different details. It shows how involved you are in the scene, and that you’re really observing it. You have the “eye” of a perfect storyteller :)
Also, reading your post makes me understand that I often take my island for granted. And I agree with you about vegetation, it’s very beautiful and variegated. I don’t remember if we talked about this, but the first cactuses are called “figu morisca” in Sardinian and fico d’India (Indian fig) in Italian, and you can actually eat its fruits. Just, be careful with those thorns 😁
In the end, I smiled when you wrote “16 degrees, enough for a short swim”. Northern blood makes the difference here, I generally stop swimming in October or November 🥲
And something that makes me think, something a bit sad, is that the way you’re showing Sardinia in the world is more powerful and passionate than how Sardinians themselves (and government) do that. This place could really be a paradise for digital nomad, but nobody cares here…

P.S. As always... STUNNING PICTURES!

Thank you for taking me on a virtual journey to the Sella del Diavolo in Sardinia! Your vivid descriptions and beautiful photographs make it easy to imagine the breathtaking landscapes and the unique charm of the area.

It's fascinating to learn about the legends associated with the Devil's Saddle and how the rock formations are said to have taken shape. The connection between the Devil's Saddle and the nearby coast being called the "coast of the Angels" adds an intriguing layer to the folklore.

Your appreciation for the local vegetation, especially the cactuses, reflects the wonder of exploring a new environment. It's always exciting to encounter flora and fauna that are distinct from what one is accustomed to.

The historical towers along the hike add a sense of history and mystique to the journey. It's interesting to see these remnants of the past scattered throughout Sardinia.

The panoramic view of the sea and the crystal-clear blue waters sounds absolutely stunning. It's moments like these, where you can connect with nature and feel a deep sense of gratitude, that make travel and exploration so fulfilling.

Your mention of the clear water and the suggestion of kayaking as a popular activity adds a dynamic element to the experience. It sounds like a place where one can truly immerse themselves in the beauty of nature.

Overall, your narrative has painted a vivid picture of the Sella del Diavolo, making it a destination that many would likely want to experience. It's a reminder of the magic that can be found in the seemingly ordinary corners of the world.

Maravilla vista!! Veo Esos saltos y me provoca lanzarme al agua y darme un chapuzón, tan cerca que la gente tiene ese paraíso y seguramente muchos viven invadidos por el stress citadino.

what a beautiful view and the photographs were spectacular.😍

How many cactuses are in your van? I had once a huge on in the dashboard on the passenger side. No hitchhiker wanted to sit next to me.
