There are better ways to start a new month and going to court is definitely not one of them. But even at that, I had a good time yesterday. I know it sounds odd to you saying I had a good time in court but I really did. It was my first time going to a court for any reason at all so I learned a lot from the experience and I laughed more than I had done the previous month if all my laughter in all the days were calculated together.
During most of the cases I heard in the court yesterday, I felt like I should become a lawyer but I guess I can't, I don't know how to argue like those guys. I might just tell the Chief Judge that "omo I no dey do again make una just clear road make we fight" because the heat of argument I saw yesterday was not here.
Surprisingly I caught myself laughing most of the time, especially when the defendant's or complainant's lawyer would jump up from their seat saying "objection my Lord, my Lord if I may, may I ??"
The argument kept going so hard that the Chief Judge kept telling them "gentle men calm down !!" hehe
The height of the laughter came when one of the lawyer arguing a case said he had an accident that gave him two fractures while coming for this case, I guess I was not the only one that heard that as everyone in the court room bursted into laughter including the Chief judge. The defendant's lawyer went ahead to tell the complainant's lawyer that he has been practicing for 22years in Lagos State so, he knows all about legal procedures and how it's done, but the complainant lawyer replied telling him that 22 years is just yesterday to him, and again the whole court went into laughter.
Within me I felt like these lawyers are just catching cruise, they should just allow them to fight so that anyone that wins the fight will win the case hehe.
Again and again, the Chief judge kept complaining about their method of argument going against the ethics of legal practice, they always responded with "most grateful Sir, we're very sorry your honour", but before you know what's happening again the whole court will be heating again with argument and laughter.
I was surprised when I saw one of the lawyers who was probably waiting for the time of his own case to come sleeping beside me, I said within me so someone can sleep in the midst of this great chaos hehe, but maybe he didn't rest much the night before probably because he was preparing for the case ahead and wanted to clear his head ahead of time by sleeping now.
One thing I loved so much about the court proceedings I witnessed yesterday was how the Chief judge remained calm and listened to everyone talk. He made sure he gave everyone a fair hearing and allowed the court to understand matters and passed his judgement based on the dictates of the constitution of the country.
I also observed that he was as relaxed as possible and was having fun while discharging his legal duties. At a particular time he asked the court to help him spell bridge and everyone chorussed the answer as we all laughed, who wouldn't forget a spelling sitting in that amount of tension he was sitting hehe. but I guess he just did it knowing it's funny though.
When I saw another lawyer in front of me watching a movie with his phone while all this were going on I felt like, "omo life no too hard so I can't come and kill myself lol, a little here, a little there and life goes on."
Another bouts of laughter came when a complainant lawyer told a woman who was standing as a witness before the court that she should limit her too much talk because her talk is already making him to sweat and he didn't plan to sweat that day hehe. Who plans to sweat in the first place, well maybe some people do.
When two young men who were handcuffed hand to hand were brought inside the court room by a police woman, "this must be a criminal case I thought within me, but why is one dressed like a criminal but the other dressed well in a black suit ? I was still thinking when one old man beside me asked me why they handcuffed this lawyer and his client ? "Ohh I don't think he is a lawyer I told the old man, he might just happen to have dressed like that when he was arrested" but who blames the old man, the young guy was looking too sharp in his black suit to be a criminal hehe.
Most of what happened in court yesterday was hilarious to me, maybe because it's my first time attending a court proceeding and I discovered the environment was not as stern as I had thought, well I learned a lot, law is a noble profession, I loved the way they could recite the constitution offhand, their knowledge of so many aspects of life, how they pay attention to tiny details, their cooperate outfits, their command of English vocabulary was top-notch. They seem to so much enjoy their profession and all the heated arguments ends in the court room as you could see them laughing and shaking hands once outside the court room. And after my first experience in court I thought no wonder they are valued so much in the society.
Better don't asked me why I went to court hehe. It's an area of life I know nothing about, so I decided I wanted to increase my knowledge base. It wasn't a bad experience after all.
