First time impressions of my kid's insurance

Picture.png

So, I'm in love with my kid insurance, like I said in my last post better to have it & not need it, than need it & not have it, usually my kid is pretty healthy I give full credit for this to the fact that he still drinks breastmilk like there is not tomorrow lol, but last year he got so sick we actually had to take him to the hospital and keep him there for a day (half a day but still it felt like a century) and since I live in Venezuela well public hospitals are just not the best place to go when you need medical attention specially if is an emergency (ironically). So, after that experience I decided I would buy my kid an insurance, is not really expensive and thanks to Hive I can afford it, I pay 17$ every month for it.

What my insurance covers

The total coverage of the insurance is 50,000 USD of medical emergencies, so a regular visit to the pediatrician is not cover or vitamins or stuff like that, it has to be labeled an emergency for them to pay the service, this is something I knew when getting it and was ok with it.

It also includes online and, on the phone, medical assistance as well as house visits.

Using it for the first time

So, this review is maybe not a completed experience since well I got the insurance on august of last year (2021) and we haven't use it, until this week, but omg I LOVED IT.

playing in one of the pools
For context, I took my kid to the pool cause the temperatures here are high as in hell, 37 degrees and more, we were melting away, as usual the kid has a lifeguard and the parents with him all the time cause even tho is a kids pool well he is only 3 years old and yeah I don't want him to drown but again he is just 3 years old and well accidents happen and he did some deep dives lol so he ended up breathing water a couple of times, my guess is this made him sick cause other than that, he really didn’t had any other symptoms before and wasn't exposed to sick kids or something like that, the next day after the pool he started to cough and by Tuesday he was coughing with flame so yeah I was worry, and I though oh well lets make this insurance work for all that I had paid, also cause wasn't really something worth the trip to the ER.

I called the service that provides medical assistance by phone, and from the start I loved the service, I was pleasantly surprise that from the first operator to the actual doctor all were so nice and helpful, they connected me with the pediatrician on call, and she prescribe what I knew would be antiallergics and nebulization, as soon as each call finished they sent an email with a medical inform and the prescription if needed or medical order for exams, I had this medication on the house so no need to go buy it.

By the next day the kid started presenting a fever and the cough was still really bad, you could tell he had a lot of phlegm in the throat, I was surprise I didn’t have to call the medical services again cause they call me to check in themselves! The doctor this time wanted the kid to have some Rx and lab work done to figure out the correct treatment since a fever was now present. The insurance obviously covered both in one of its clinics and we went to get it done the same day.

Now I had the results but was wondering how on earth a phone doctor would read this maybe they would send me to an actual clinic or something, well nope they just asked for the test to be sent by email and as soon as they got them, they call me back to give me the treatment we need to put the kid asap since turns out he had a small lung infection (again I blame the pool).

The one bad thing

By this time, I was on the phone with the third doctor who had “treated” my kid and she was prescribing him with a bunch of medications some antibiotics and some cough medicine, when the call was ending, she said the insurance will contact you regarding the medicine, yet I didn’t expect to be as soon as she ended the call, they were as always so nice and told me they would send all the medication to my house, as soon as I would send the address, but here is the thing!!! The one bad thing that I can find in this whole experience.

They don't do deliveries to the town where I live (cause hello Jumanji) so the solution they offered me was to reimburse me for buying the medicine, I want thank here @eddiespino who is wealthy enough (cause he doesn't have kid yet!) to have Hive around to make me a small loan LMAO (en serio gracias Eddie!) and @nathanpieters cause he is an idiot with a good heart. They made it possible for me to go buy the medicines on the same day to start the treatment of the kid quickly.

So my one complain about the service is that, they don't do the delivery of the medicine to the houses of the patients if they don't live in central cities, and in this particular case I manage to work things out, but what if I couldn’t find help or wouldn’t had money at all to buy them? yeah that would suck. They did say that if I provided a address in a city where they did do the deliveries they would send the medicine that way but, at that time I didn’t have anyone familiar in the nearest city to do me the favor of receiving it for me.

So far so good… loved the regular check ups

The treatment they prescribe was supposed to last 5 days, which actually ends today, but they have continued to do regular check ups on the progress of the kid, I feel this this is the best part of the whole thing, why? Cause if I would have gotten him to the ER and a doctor would have done a in person physical exam would maybe reassured me the doctors didn’t missed anything that by the phone they could but again since this was not a really serios case I think the service they provided by the phone was really awesome and did the work needed, with the added plus that a visit to the ER wouldn’t and that is the continued check ups they have been doing every couple of days they have call to check on the kid, asked questions and in today’s case told me that even if the kid is a lot better by now and even tho the original treatment was supposed to end today will need to carry on with the nebulization for a couple more days to fight with the phlegm a little bit better.

They said they will call again next Saturday when they kid should be completely recover from this.

Not a paid advertisement but….

If you are looking for a good insurance for your kid in Venezuela you should get Mercantil Seguros, I mean in my kid case he is 3 years old, and the coverage is 50,000USD for only 17$ a month so yeah, not bad.

You can actually buy it online without any insurance broker help at

Fact: I am an idiot. And an asshole.

Yes but good heart 😂
