Moxie: Speak Your Truth

As a huge fan of high school movies, I knew I was going to like Moxie but little did I know this movie had a little surprise on the side. You know how you watch a movie and suddenly feel empowered to do something? Moxie was that kind of movie for me. After watching the movie, I even did something rebellious but that’s a story for another day.

Moxie is a 2021 comedy/drama about a girl who started an anonymous movement in her school to call out sexism. After finding out the main character was timid, I began wondering how she was going to keep the movement going because from what I know, these things need bravery. I was even scared for her because she didn’t seem like she would ever be brave enough to show herself.

I always say if a character manages to get you angry, annoyed or sad, then you should know how good he/she is. These characters got me feeling exactly how they wanted me to feel. Although the plot wasn’t even so twisted and I could predict how the movie was going to end, there was something different about the characters.

I kept on being surprised by each one of their actions. There were times I had to go back to watch a scene and ask myself did this character really do/say this? Let me just say the characters did certain things that could get you to open your eyes and mouth in shock. The movement the main character started brought out another side of all the actors. Even the most quiet actor did the unthinkable.

The main problem I had with Moxie was the Gen Z environment. It wasn’t as I was expecting. The Gen Z part of the movie looked so forced. I didn’t understand why Gen Zs will have to wait for an anonymous person to lead a movement. The Generation Z that I know? They don’t even need a reason to rebel so having a reason is just a bonus.

Another side that I didn’t like was how the plot was so predictable. At a point, I was even saying what the next scene would be and they turned out exactly like that. Oh, except this particular scene that shocked me(find out yourself though). And before I forget, there were so many unnecessary scenes that made no sense to me. I said a lot of “ahhs” to many scenes because they seemed like the writer didn’t know where to put them. Hence, fixing them anywhere.

This movie threw light on so many things for me. From friendship, to betrayal to fighting for what you believe in. It wasn’t the regular high school movie where someone is so bothered about her boyfriend and her crush and blah blah. No, I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with such movies but then this was way different. I’ll recommend this movie for anyone who likes high school movies. Just note that it doesn’t come with all that cheerleading drama.
