Hello community, as a true lover of movies and shows, I want to start bringing some of the works that have been my all-time favorites, which have had an impact on my vision and the way I see things.
As you saw in the title, today I want to talk about Veep. Let's get to it.
i. intro
Let's talk about Veep, a comedy created by Armando Iannucci, which premiered in 2012 and quickly became a benchmark in the genre of political satire. I wouldn't like to say that it's just a political comedy because, although it is, I believe it is one of the best ways to reach the peak of humor.
Selina Meyer, played by the great Julia Louis-Dreyfus, is an absurd politician, often a disastrous woman dancing between ambition and stress, while serving as the Vice President of the United States. In seven seasons, Veep offers biting and hilarious insights into the intricacies of power in Washington D.C., where it illustrates an ecosystem of individuals playing at being politicians in an embarrassing manner with infinite madness and without boundaries between offensive and good behavior.
ii. What Veep is About
The story of Veep is based on the misadventures of Selina Meyer's political environment, where we meet her team, a group of incredible, pictorial characters including her loyal chief of staff Amy Brookheimer (Anna Chlumsky), the sycophantic Gary Walsh (Tony Hale), and a communications director Mike McLintock (Matt Walsh), who is not very skilled in communication.
From the first episode, we realize that the series insists that the position of Vice President is one of the most useless in the system, but at the same time, it's one step away from the most powerful position in the world.
We find agile and aggressive dialogues, as well as entangled circumstances that contrast the incompetence and sometimes excessive attitude of the agents playing at politics. Obviously, being fiction, the series aims to exaggerate (or not) internal struggles, acts of betrayal, and relentless, childish maneuvers that seek one thing: power. All this is wrapped in an ironic tone that I at least loved. From the impact of a cold or going to the doctor to public scandals driven by purely sociopathic attitudes, Selina and her disciples navigate a world where every decision has shocking and disastrous consequences, and any victory doesn't feel like a victory or stops being one in an instant.
iii. My Thoughts on Veep
With everything described, it might be hard to imagine how all this can be funny, but I had moments of endless laughter where I lost consciousness and even forgot why I was laughing.
I wouldn't consider this series too elitist, but I think that genres like humor and comedy are things each person develops because they are essential parts of life and form part of every personality. Developing humor and living it is as essential in life as our way of seeing love; humor, although not very precise because we never know when something can surprise us and make us laugh, can be a strong force that surrounds our values.
Therefore, I do believe that, as each country or culture has its circumstances and develops humor around them, it's difficult to connect with this series if you don't understand the American political context or know a bit about politics or the United States to connect with the series' humor.
It's not a series about political terms because, in the end, politics becomes an excuse to show the madness of human beings. Veep wants to depict irrational behavior in the most countercultural way.
If you've seen series like Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, or The Office, you might expect something similar from Julia, but the truth is it's much more than that because the characters are much more pictorial and move at a different speed. I think there's a hint of Seinfeld because perhaps all the behaviors Seinfeld seeks to criticize or question can be seen in Veep in the most grotesque and exaggerated way, in a political context where everyone seeks to stand out at all costs.
I know it's often compared to The Office, and perhaps some characters might have certain influences, but in this sense, Veep is much more grounded.
We could talk about the spectacular performance of Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Her portrayal of Selina Meyer is light-years ahead, bringing a fusion of charisma, arrogance, and vulnerability that lend themselves to classist, even sexist and psychopathic scenes of the character. Here, I think the series can get dangerous with humor because, in the end, it shows abuses of power, since it's a workplace environment, and this occurs in any part of the world, where humor can begin to divide and discomfort. Even saying you love that aspect of the series might sound strange to some.
Louis-Dreyfus flows perfectly in the fast-paced dialogues, where I don't doubt that much of the situations had a lot of improvisation, a characteristic element of comedy, which makes it play with believability and engages you in the plot as if it were a drama. Transforming Selina into a character who is both hateful and endearing is a job that deserves infinite applause.
We can also talk about Tony Hale, who plays one of the most important characters in the entire story as Gary Walsh. The connection between Hale and Louis-Dreyfus is absurdly palpable and contradictory, their codependent relationship is a constant source of excessive humor. Gary Walsh is one of my favorite characters, but above him is Jonah Ryan (Timothy Simons), a socially sick character who can coexist as a psychopath causing disgust and laughter in these power environments where we don't even know how he can exist being the most disrespectful.
We also have Richard, an infinite source of jokes, Dan, a contrasting version to Jonah but equally sick, and Amy, the latter probably the most robotic due to her work addiction, has her moments of grace, but I think her character seeks to denounce herself as a figure who is mentally unwell and also depends extremely on her relationship with Selina.
The writing of this great work balances humor with a scathing critique of American politics. Veep laughs at everyone, regardless of ideology, and exposes any behavior with exaggerated and brutal precision. Veep doesn't seek to reflect, as is typical of satirical comedies, but perhaps just wants to show how humans distort the values of those around them while at the same time overwhelming you with a scene of humiliation.
iv. Conclusion and Rating
I'm not a big fan of rating, but since I see many people do it and I tend to exaggerate because I get very passionate about things I see and like, and what I don't like I usually abandon and don't finish watching, so why give it a 5, I give Veep a 9 instead of a 10.
In conclusion, Veep is a comedy masterpiece that brings together exceptional performances, clever writing, and an excessively aggressive satirical tone. The series stands out for its ability to make you uncomfortable and laugh at the same time while offering a critique of the American political system. Selina Meyer becomes a memorable, iconic female character in comedy. Additionally, the supporting characters constantly feed off each other and achieve humor that keeps improving and surpassing itself in every episode.
I would highlight that Veep is unique in the genre because it's difficult to associate it with other ideas. The Office is still there, but for many reasons, they are extremely different in terms of sensations for me.
If you haven't seen Veep yet, I would recommend considering it to educate our humor. I'm someone who enjoys entertainment a lot, but I like to see it as a form of development, whether in thought or personality, and I believe that with comedy, it's much simpler to achieve.

Como vieron en el título hoy quiero hablar de Veep. Vamos a ello.
i. intro
Hablemos de Veep, una comedia creada por Armando Iannucci, estrenada en 2012 y rápidamente se convirtió en un referente en el género de la sátira política. No me gustaría decir que es solo una comedia política porque, aunque lo es creo que es uno de los mejores caminos de llegar al peak del humor.
Selina Meyer, interpretada por la gran Julia Louis-Dreyfus, es una política muy absurda, a menudo una mujer desastrosa bailando entre la ambición y el estrés, mientras ocupa el cargo de vicepresidenta de los Estados Unidos. En siete temporadas, Veep ofrece nociones mordaces e hilarantes a los entresijos del poder en Washington D.C., donde nos ilustran un ecosistema de individuos jugando a ser políticos de manera vergonzosa con una infinita locura y sin márgenes entre lo ofensivo y el buen comportamiento.
ii. De qué va Veep
La historia de Veep se basa en las desventuras del entorno político de Selina Meyer donde nos encontramos con su equipo, unos increíbles personajes pictóricos conformado por la leal jefa de personal Amy Brookheimer (Anna Chlumsky), el adulador Gary Walsh (Tony Hale), y un director de comunicaciones Mike McLintock (Matt Walsh) el cual no es muy especialista en comunicación.
Desde el primer episodio nos daremos cuenta de que la serie nos quiere insistir en que el cargo de vicepresidente es de los más inútiles del sistema, pero al mismo tiempo está a un paso del cargo más poderoso en el mundo.
Encontraremos diálogos ágiles y superagresivos, así como de circunstancias entorpecidas que contrastan la incompetencia y un vacío y otras veces exceso de actitud por parte de los agentes que juegan a la política. Obviamente al ser ficción, la serie quiere exagerar (o no) las luchas internas, jugadas de traición y las constantes maniobras incansablemente infantiles que solo quieren una cosa: poder. Todo esto envuelto en un tono irónico que al menos a mí me encantó. Desde el impacto de un resfriado o de ir al médico hasta escándalos públicos protagonizados por actitudes meramente sociópatas, Selina y sus discípulos navegan por un mundo donde cada decisión tiene consecuencias chocantes y desastrosas, además de que cualquier victoria no parece victoria o deja de serlo en un instante.
iii. Mis ideas sobre Veep
Con todo lo descrito creo que aun cuesta imaginar que todo esto de alguna forma haga gracia, pero yo tuve unos momentos de risa infinita de la que pierdes el conocimiento incluso olvidaba porque me reía.
Esta serie no podría considerarla tan elitista, pero pienso que géneros como el humor y la comedia son cosas que cada persona desarrolla porque es algo esencial de la vida y forma parte de cada personalidad, desarrollar el humor y vivirlo es tan esencial en la vida como nuestra forma de ver el amor, es decir el humor, aunque no es muy preciso porque nunca sabemos cuándo algo puede sorprendernos y hacernos reír, puede ser un fuerte que rodea nuestros valores.
Por tanto, sí que pienso que, como cada país o cultura tienen sus circunstancias y en torno a eso desarrollan el humor es difícil conectar con esta serie más si no se entiende el contexto político americano, o incluso saber un poco de política o de Estados Unidos para que puedas conectar con la gracia de esta serie.
No es una serie tan de términos políticos porque al final la política pasa a ser una excusa para mostrar la locura de los seres humanos, Veep quiere dibujar el comportamiento sin razón de las personas de la manera más contracultural.
Probablemente si has visto series como Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm o The Office, esperes algo parecido de Julia, pero la verdad es que es mucho más que eso porque de verdad los personajes son mucho más pictóricos y van en otra velocidad. Obviamente creo que, sí que hay una pizca de Seinfeld porque quizá todos los comportamientos que Seinfeld busca criticar o cuestionar, se pueden notar en Veep de la manera más grotesca y exagerada, en un contexto político donde todos buscan destacar a toda costa.
Sé que la comparan mucho con The Office, y quizá algún que otro personaje puede tener cierta influencia, pero en este sentido Veep sí que tiene mucho más los pies sobre la tierra.
Podríamos hablar de la espectacular actuación de Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Su interpretación de Selina Meyer está a años luz, aportando una fusión de carisma, arrogancia y vulnerabilidad las cuales se prestan para escenas clasistas, incluso machistas y psicopáticas del personaje. Aquí creo que la serie puede ponerse peligrosa con el humor porque dentro de todo muestran abusos de poder, ya que al final es un área de trabajo y de alguna manera esto ocurre en cualquier parte del mundo, y es donde el humor puede comenzar a dividirse e incomodar. Incluso decir que te encanta eso de la serie puede sonar extraño para algunos.
Louis-Dreyfus fluye de manera perfecta en los diálogos rápidos donde no dudo que en gran parte de las situaciones hubo bastante improvisación, elemento característico de la comedia, lo cual hace que juegue con lo creíble y te enganches a la trama como si fuera un drama. Transformar a Selina en un personaje odioso y entrañable a la vez es un trabajo que merece aplausos infinitos.
También podemos hablar de Tony Hale quien interpreta uno de los personajes más importantes de toda la historia como Gary Walsh. La conexión entre Hale y Louis-Dreyfus es absurdamente palpable y contradictoria, su relación codependiente es una fuente constante de excesivo humor. Gary Walsh es de mis personajes favoritos, pero por encima está Jonah Ryan (Timothy Simons), un personaje socialmente enfermizo que puede convivir siendo un psicópata que te causa asco y risa en estos entornos de poder donde no sabemos ni cómo puede existir siendo el más irrespetuoso.
También tenemos a Richard, como una fuente infinita de chistes, Dan una versión contraria a Jonah pero igual de enfermizo y Amy, esta última probablemente la más robótica por ser adicta al trabajo, tiene sus momentos de gracia, pero creo que su personaje busca más bien denunciarse como figura que está mal mentalmente y también depende in extremis de la relación con Selina.
La escritura de esta gran obra logra equilibrar el humor con una crítica incisiva de la política estadounidense. Veep se ríe de todos, sin tomar en cuenta la ideología, y expone cualquier comportamiento con una precisión exagerada y brutal. Veep no busca reflexionar, a es algo típico de las comedias satíricas, quizá solo quiere mostrar la forma en la que los humanos distorsionan los valores de quien te rodea, aunque al mismo tiempo te abrumen con una escena de humillación.
iv. Conclusión y puntuación
No soy muy fan de puntuar, pero como veo que muchos lo hacen y yo tiendo a exagerar, porque yo me apasiono mucho con las cosas que veo y me gustan, y lo que no me gusta suelo abandonarlo y no termino de verlo para qué darle un 5, así que a Veep para no darle un 10 le doy un 9.
En conclusión, Veep es una obra maestra de la comedia la cual reúne actuaciones excepcionales, una escritura astuta y en un tono satírico excesivamente agresivo. La serie destaca por esa capacidad de incomodar y hacernos reír a la vez que podría ofrecer una denuncia al sistema político estadounidense. Selina Meyer se convierte en un personaje memorable, icónico como personaje femenino para la comedia. Además el entorno de personajes con el cual se asocia se alimenta constantemente y logran un humor que no para de mejorar y de superarse en cada capítulo.
Destacaría que Veep es única en el género porque de verdad es difícil asociarla a otras ideas, sigue estando The Office pero por muchas razones para mí son extremadamente distintas en cuanto a sensaciones.
Si aún no has visto Veep, recomendaría considerarla para educar nuestro humor. Soy alguien que disfruta mucho del entretenimiento, pero me gusta verlo como una forma desarrollo ya sea del pensamiento o personalidad y creo que con la comedia es mucho más simple lograrlo.
