Apple Cider Vinegar: An attempt to control the masses?

Apple Vinegar is a fairly new Netflix series that truth be told left me with my head spinning and with a certain sense of anger. however, I must say that it is a very good production. I especially like it because it is based on a true story, and I think that makes it even more powerful to the series and the story.

I must recommend 2 things before watching it:

1: If you are still very involved with conventional medicine, open your eyes wide when watching it and allow yourself to be CRITICAL minded.
2: If the subject matter of cancer or terminal illnesses mobilizes you too much to the point that it generates a discomfort that affects you for hours or even days, please don't watch this series.

Apple Cider Vinegar tackles two stories that at the same time introduce two very strong themes that both come together in one powerful concept (if you will): the power of SUGGESTION.

Vinagre de Manzana: ¿Un intento de controlar a las masas?

Vinagre de Manzana es una serie de Netflix bastante nueva que la verdad que me dejó con la cabeza dando mil vueltas y con cierta sensación de ira. sin embargo, debo decir que es una producción muy buena. Me gusta especialmente porque está basada en una historia real, y creo que eso la hace aún más poderosa a la serie y a la historia.

Debo recomendar 2 cosas antes de verla:

1: Si aún estás muy involucrada/o con la medicina convencional, abre bien los ojos al verla y permítete tener una mente CRÍTICA.
2: Si la temática del cáncer o de las enfermedades terminales te moviliza demasiado al punto que te genera un malestar que te afecta por horas e incluso días, por favor no veas esta serie.

Vinagre de Manzana aborda dos historias que al mismo tiempo introducen dos temáticas muy fuertes que se unen ambas en un poderoso concepto (si se quiere): el poder de la SUGESTIÓN.

It tells us about cancer as a terminal disease that the two protagonists suffer from, in addition to the communication networks they both use to tell their story. And it goes through the story... medicine, both conventional and “alternative”, to give a name to the universe of holistic therapies.

The problem is that one of them is not really sick with cancer. Although the girl claims to have brain cancer, what she really has, unbeknownst to her, is a pathology that affects her mental health. Belle (Kaitlyn Dever), this girl, uses the communication networks to become famous at the expense of her supposed cancer, and she uses this false story to set up a whole healing system based on food that many patients who do have the disease begin to adopt. Some of them even show improvement in their evolution, which is quite disconcerting and contradictory, because as a viewer you know that the protagonist is blatantly lying and playing with people's lives.

Nos habla del cáncer como enfermedad terminal que las dos protagonistas padecen, sumado a las redes de comunicación que ambas utilizan para contar su historia. Y atraviesa la historia… la medicina, tanto convencional como “alternativa”, por ponerle un nombre al universo de las terapias holísticas.

El problema es que una de ellas en verdad no está enferma de cáncer. Aunque la chica dice tener cáncer cerebral, en verdad lo que tiene, sin saberlo, es una patología que afecta su salud mental. Belle (Kaitlyn Dever), esta chica, utiliza a las redes de comunicación para hacerse famosa a costa de su supuesto cáncer, y monta en esa falsa historia todo un sistema de sanación basado en la alimentación que muchos pacientes que sí tienen la enfermedad empiezan a adoptar. Algunos de ellos incluso muestran hasta mejoría en su evolución, lo cual es bastante desconcertante y contradictorio, porque una como espectadora sabe que la protagonista está mintiendo descaradamente y está jugando con la vida de la gente.

The other girl, Milla (Alycia Debnam-Carey), does have cancer and since the immediate medical treatment offered is to amputate her affected arm, Milla decides to embark on a journey into the world of holistic and integral healing, and chooses to share her story with the world, which at the same time is linked to an “elite” community in Mexico, which offers treatments to a few who are allowed to enter.

Two great powers of the present day that are raising money in spades and playing with people's lives begin to run in the series: the “New Age” current and the already known Pharmaceutical Industry.

I have previously left some reviews of series and movies where I share that I am not in favor of chemicals as a means of healing, but just in case I repeat it. I am not an extremist either, let it be known. I also recognize that I medicate myself (with pharmaceutical products) if necessary, but I do not like to abuse, and the truth is that I always try to heal naturally first and if there is no other way, well, I accept artificial medication.

La otra chica, Milla (Alycia Debnam-Carey), sí que tiene cáncer y como el tratamiento médico inmediato que se le ofrece es amputarle su brazo afectado, Milla decide emprender viaje por el mundo de la sanación holística e integral, y elige compartir con el mundo su historia, que al mismo tiempo está vinculada con una comunidad de México “de elite”, que ofrece tratamientos a unos pocos a los que se les permite ingresar.

Empiezan a correr en la serie dos grandes poderes de la actualidad que están levantando dinero en pala y jugando con la vida de la gente: la corriente “New Age” y la ya conocida Insdustria Farmacéutica.

He dejado previamente algunas reseñas de series y películas en donde comparto que no estoy a favor de los químicos como medio de sanación, pero por las dudas lo repito. Tampoco soy extremista, que se sepa. Reconozco también que yo misma me medico (con productos de farmacéuticas) de ser necesario, pero no me gusta abusar, y la verdad es que siempre intento sanar de manera natural primero y si no queda otra, bueno, acepto la medicación artificial.

But this series has made my hair stand on end, as we would say in Argentina. It not only deals with a hyper-delicate subject, but also lets a message filter through in a very subtle way that, through the fear of showing consequences, exposes that THE way is the traditional treatments, when we know that there are many techniques from other types of medicine, which also heal.

Although it gives a role to holistic therapy, it ends up somehow “blaming” this whole universe and dropping a: and well, too bad for not having opted for western medicine.

I find that appalling, because in the end there are many people, especially teenagers who will watch this series and who will unwittingly adopt this message as true. And I'm not saying it isn't, but it's not the absolute truth.

Pero es que esta serie me ha “puesto los pelos de punta”, como diríamos en Argentina. No sólo aborda una temática híper delicada, sino que además deja filtrar un mensaje de manera muy sutil que, mediante el miedo por mostrar consecuencias, expone que EL camino son los tratamientos tradicionales, cuando conocemos que hay muchas técnicas provenientes de otro tipo de medicinas, que también sanan.

Aunque le da un rol a la terapia holística, termina por “culpar” de alguna manera a todo este universo y por dejar caer un: y bueno, una lástima por no haber optado por la medicina occidental.

Me parece un espanto eso, pues al final hay muchas personas, especialmente adolescentes que verán esta serie y que sin quererlo adoptarán este mensaje como cierto. Y no digo que no lo sea, pero no es la verdad absoluta.

On top of all this, Belle is promoting over and over again false stories about her health that end up affecting the lives of entire families, because she makes promises of full treatment payments for sick children, which she never intended to support.

This is tremendous, and on top of that, the bankruptcy of her millionaire business that she was able to set up and sustain at the cost of providing false messages and generating false hope in all her audience, without any qualms and without a hint of repentance. What do you say?

A todo esto se suma a Belle promocionando una y otra vez historias falsas sobre su salud que terminan afectando a la vida de familias enteras, porque a la chica se le ocurre hacer promesas de pagos de tratamientos completos para niños enfermos, que jamás tuvo la intención de respaldar.

Esto es tremendo, y a ello se suma la quiebra de su negocio millonario que fue capaz de montar y de sostener a costa de brindar mensajes falsos y de generar esperanza falsa en toda su audiencia, sin reparo alguno y sin una pizca de arrepentimiento. ¿Qué me decís?

I think the best thing is to complement the therapies and especially that the person, who is free, feels good about the choice he/she makes and that “I made a mistake” does not fall on him/her, which is what this story tells us.

The series is excellent, but you have to watch it with a CRITICAL eye and be able to analyze what is being presented.

Creo que lo mejor es complementar las terapias y especialmente que la persona, que es libre, se sienta bien con la elección que tome y que no recaiga sobre ella un “me equivoqué”, que es lo que nos comenta esta historia.

La serie es excelente, pero hay que verla con ojo CRÍTICO y ser capaz de analizar lo que está presentando.
