Hello, Hive and to all my movie fanatic friends out there. I came across @moviesonhive 's post about movie reviews and just happened I was thinking of watching a movie I've seen not so long ago. So this would be my very first post in this community.
Death - Fight It or Lay Down and Accept it?
I am confused here about the character in this movie I watched called "The Grey", and I would like to know how you think he sees life versus death. I have done my best to describe it in a way that is really clear.

The movie was about a group of men who were flying home over some remote area, (not sure if it was the Arctic or what), I wasn't watching closely really until the movie got deeper. Anyway, one of the men (Liam Neeson) had lost his wife due to illness (there were many flashbacks of him with her) and he wanted to die feeling he had nothing to live for any longer. For some reason, though, he boarded the plane (before that, there was a scene of him with his rifle barrel in his mouth).
Jumping forward the plane had crashed into the snowy barrenness of the mountains. There was carnage everywhere and the plane was completely destroyed and scattered across the snow. Liam was of course a survivor and helping others and took up the leadership position of keeping everyone remaining (I think there were 8 total) alive throughout the movie.
They started walking to the south where they had hoped they would run into cabins or hunters or anyone who could help them, but as time passed tragedy happened one person at a time and mostly from a pack of wild wolves who kept attacking and killing anyone who was a straggler. People were also dying due to the weather. He fought for every one of them to live until he was the last survivor at which point he decided to give in.
He gets on his knees and takes all the wallets that were collected from the dead and makes a pile on the ground after going through and looking at the family photos and says to himself, "ok this is it, I'm ready to lay down and die", knowing that hypothermia would soon set in. Again, ready to give up his life and accept death, no reason to fight. He then looks up and sees he is surrounded by the wolves as he is kneeling down in the wolves' den.
This man has me so confused with his behavior now because just as he is ready to give up, he sees this one last fight in front of him. He takes these mini liquor bottles from the plane and tapes one between each finger as the wolves' pack leader moves forward, then he smashes the ends of the bottles off so its like he has blades taped to his hands, their eyes intensely lock and the wolf springs forward at him.
Analysis time - Is he afraid to die? Is he afraid to live? Does he welcome death? Does he only welcome death if he has the opportunity to fight for it? In the beginning he was going to commit suicide and in the end he was going to lay down and accept death and then fights to live or maybe wants a noble death.
I am now really lost. What do you guys think?
One love,
