Hello friends of Hive! This is my first time posting in this community. I wanted to take advantage of today, which is celebrating the pride of the LGBTIQ+ community, to tell you about a film that moved me a lot.
"Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe" is a film by Aitch Alberto, based on the novel of the same name by Benjamín Alire Sáenz. The story is based on the town of "El Paso", around 1987. That summer begins the meeting of two young people of Mexican origin, who through their friendship will experience radical changes in their lives and in the way they see themselves and others.
Aristotle is very serious. Almost friendless, he is a boy who prefers to be alone most of the time. He believes that his biggest problem is that his parents never talk about his older brother, who is in prison. In reality, he has to face many other problems, such as the fact of feeling at odds with his brothers, who are more than 10 years older than him, his lack of relationships with other young people of his age group, and the abandonment he feels from his father (the latter a veteran of the Viet Nam war, who also carries with him worries carried over from that conflict). Ari finds his greatest support in his mother, whom he dares to judge and analyze just as she does with him.
On the other hand, Dante is charismatic and communicative. He is not afraid to say what he thinks, even if this is sometimes the product of his impulsivity. He loves books, is very messy, and has a very serious war with work and with his shoes. He treats his parents with overflowing love, and despite his characteristics, he also has few friends.
When they met for the first time in a pool, the life of the two would change forever. For Ari, it would be to know new words, take on new customs, and become a wiser man. For Dante, to know himself more from the reflection of his friend. Themes such as self-acceptance, cultural identity and common interests are continuously reflected in this film.
The film has an admirable cinematography direction. Something I also liked was the fact how they treated the timeline originally described in the book in such a way that it still made sense for the story they wanted to tell. There is also the fact that they added Aristotle's aunt in the cast, who is not so present in the book, but here she plays a fundamental role in the self-discovery of young people.
If there is one thing that I really liked about the book and that was also in the movie, it is that the important thing is not the birth of a homosexual relationship. What is most relevant is the growth of the characters since they met, something that the main actors, despite being so young, manage to embody perfectly.

¡Hola amigos de Hive! Esta es mi primera vez publicando en esta comunidad. Quería aprovechar el día de hoy, que se celebra el orgullo de la comunidad LGBTIQ+, para comentarles acerca de una película que me conmovió muchísimo.
"Aristóteles y Dante descubren los Misterios del Universo" es una película de Aitch Alberto, basada en la novela homónima de Benjamín Alire Sáenz. La historia se basa en la localidad de "El Paso", alrededor de 1987. En ese verano comienza el encuentro de dos jóvenes de origen mexicano, que a través de su amistad experimentarán cambios radicales en su vida y en la manera de verse a sí mismos y a los otros.
Aristóteles es muy serio. Casi sin amigos, es un muchacho que prefiere estar solo la mayoría del tiempo. Cree que su problema más grande es que sus padres nunca hablan de su hermano mayor, quien está preso. En realidad, debe afrontar muchas otras problemáticas, como el hecho de sentirse en desnivel con sus hermanos, que son más de 10 años mayores que él, su falta de relaciones con otros jóvenes de su grupo de edad, y el abandono que siente por parte de su padre (este último un veterano de la guerra de Viet Nam, que también carga con preocupaciones arrastradas desde ese conflicto). Ari encuentra su mayor apoyo en su madre, a quien se atreve a juzgar y analizar tal como ella lo hace con él.
Por otro lado, Dante es carismático y comunicativo. No tiene miedo de decir lo que piensa, aunque esto a veces sea producto de su impulsividad. Ama los libros, es muy desordenado, y tiene una guerra muy seria con el trabajo y con sus zapatos. Trata a sus padres con un amor desbordante, y a pesar de sus características, también tiene pocos amigos.
Al encontrarse por primera vez en una alberca, la vida de los dos cambiaría para siempre. Para Ari, sería conocer nuevas palabras, asumir nuevas costumbres, y volverse un hombre más sabio. Para Dante, conocerse más a sí mismo desde el reflejo de su amigo. Temas como la autoaceptación, la identidad cultural y los intereses en común se ven reflejados continuamente en ests cinta.
La película tiene una dirección de fotografía admirable. Algo que también me gustó fue el hecho de cómo trataron la línea temporal descrita originalmente en el libro de manera que todavía tuviera sentido para la historia que querían contar. También está el hecho de que añadieran en el reparto a la tía de Aristóteles, que en el libro no está tan presente, pero acá desarrolla un papel fundamental en el autodescubrimiento de los jóvenes.
Si hay algo que me gustó mucho del libro y que en la película también estuvo es que lo importante no es el nacimiento de una relación homosexual. Lo que se lleva mayor relevancia es el crecimiento de los personajes desde que se conocieron, algo que los actores principales, a pesar de ser tan jóvenes, logran encarnar a la perfección.
