Some movies are wrongly criticized by critics thereby making them be rated low in the theaters. This movie is one of the movies I see that was wrongly criticized. 'When the bough breaks' is a psychological thriller film that revolves around a lady who develops a romantic interest in the husband of a couple she is a surrogate. This movie was released in September 2016 with Screen gems as its distributor.
The movie begins with a couple (John and Laura) who have been struggling to start their family but keep having failed pregnancies. Laura had three miscarriages after trying several methods to have a baby. With this struggle, the couple opts out of surrogacy. So they contacted the agency involved with this method and they hired Anna, a beautiful young lady who agreed to carry their baby to full term.
After the doctor's appointment, Anna got pregnant on the first trial. The couple was so excited that they were going to be parents. After a few days, John received a call from the police about Anna who was a victim of domestic abuse by her boyfriend Mike. So the couple insisted that Anna move in with them in their guest house. From there, the Journey of Anna's obsession with John began. My dad always says, "Little things being ignored turn into a burden and cause havoc later on".
As the pregnancy progresses, Anna's obsession with John got in the way of the initial plan she had with her boyfriend Mike to scam the couple for money. Then Anna told John about her feelings for him but it wasn't reciprocated back. Getting this negative feedback from John, Anna went as far as wrongly accusing John of having sex with her every night, killing Mike to get him out of the way, and running away with their baby.
Laura and John planned to take back their baby by letting her husband play into his desires for Anna. In the process, John has to pretend he loved her, and then as requested by Anna, he takes her to their lake house to spend some time together. John then carried his child when Anna was fast asleep and something eventually goes wrong!
My review about this movie is a positive one which confuses me how this movie got rated low in the theaters. Usually, I don't like thrillers that involve psycho characters or obsessed characters, they get me agitated, but this movie depicts the dreadful reality of what could happen if money-hungry, psychotic surrogates' backgrounds are not fully investigated before being signed up to carry a couple's baby. These things happen for real and I see this movie as a lesson or let's say a manual for couples thinking about going for the surrogacy method to start a family.
It was interesting for me, the setting was amazing, the characters blended well with their parts and it was so unpredictable. Also, this movie got me thinking about how childhood trauma/abuse can traumatize and destroy lives. Anna's character was abused as a child and she later became a twisted demonized adult. Rating this movie with 4.5 stars and I recommend this movie to psychological thriller movie lovers. This movie wasn't tasteless as the critics say, it just simply portrays the reality of life, but I think the critics of this movie were expecting something with more twists and different from what they are used to.
