Atlantis: The Lost Empire Review (esp/eng)

Recuerdo cuando vi está película por primera vez cuando era niño, me sorprendió saber que era de Disney ya que era muy diferente a lo que estaba acostumbrado. El inicio es impresionante, vemos a los atlantes y como un gran cataclismo causó que la ciudad terminara bajo el agua, luego saltamos hasta el siglo XX y conocemos al protagonista Milo Tach, con el cual recorreremos ese gran viaje.

Fue de los inicios de Disney en cintas de ciencia ficción, cuenta con una gran variedad de personajes carismáticos, un argumento y narrativa más adultos, combinado con una animación particular que combina 2D con 3D. Cómo muchas obras de culto fue un fracaso en taquilla, pero cuenta con muchas virtudes que hacen que sea una de las películas más especiales y que merece ser vista una y otra vez.

Vemos como el protagonista tiene el gran sueño de hallar la Atlántida, pero nadie lo toma en serio, pero gracias al legado de su abuelo obtiene la oportunidad de lograr su sueño. Ya que es el nombre de la película gran parte de la trama transcurre en Atlantis, ahí conocemos a una de los mejores personajes femeninos de Disney, Kida quien es la princesa del lugar, que de hecho es la primera en volverse reina en una cinta de Disney, mucho antes que Elsa en Frozen.

A pesar de que Kida es tan buen personaje, debido al fracaso en taquilla la compañía del ratón parece querer fingir que ella no fue creada y nunca la incluyen con las demás princesas, el mismo caso que con la princesa Elena de la cinta Taron y el Caldero Mágico.

Disney ha borrado casi todo rastro de Atlantis, fue un fracaso que solo recaudó 186 millones de dólares a nivel mundial, eso no cambia que es una excelente historia, aunque hubo una polémica por tener parecido al anime Fushigi no Umi no Nadia, aunque la versión oficial se basa en el libro 20.000 leguas de viaje submarino de Julio Verne.

Ya desde ahí se puede suponer que el argumento se centra en una expedición y los peligros que eso conlleva. Atlantis logra transmitir una gran sensación de peligro mejor que muchas películas, ya sea enfrentando al Leviatán o las luciérnagas ardientes, todo es amenazante, hasta la propia Atlantis se siente peligrosa.

El grupo de personajes es muy diverso, cada uno tiene una personalidad muy bien construida, aunque de habla mucho de representación en el cine, nadie habla mucho de la excelente inclusión en esta película del año 2002. Pero lo que los hace resaltar tanto es que nos dan diálogos geniales, el villano pareciera ser el más normal de la historia.

Otro punto a favor es que el espectador se siente parte del viaje es propuesto en la historia, aunque es angustiante el recorrido, quedamos impactados al ver la Atlántida, los escenarios son asombrosos pudiendo notar elementos de diferentes culturas, ya que se plantea que desde ahí surgieron todas las culturas del mundo, hasta se diseñó un idioma único para los nativos de la isla creado por Marc Okrand, creador del Klingon y el Vulcano.

Lo que hace tan especial a este filme es como logra combinar humor, acción, giros inesperados, logrando que la hora y media de duración fluya rápidamente sin olvidar la excelente banda sonora de James Newton Howard. Una historia que nunca me canso de ver.

I remember when I saw this movie for the first time when I was a kid, I was surprised to know that it was from Disney because it was very different from what I was used to. The beginning is impressive, we see the Atlanteans and how a great cataclysm caused the city to end up underwater, then we jump to the twentieth century and meet the protagonist Milo Tach, with whom we will go through that great journey.

It was one of Disney's beginnings in science fiction films, with a great variety of charismatic characters, a more adult plot and narrative, combined with a particular animation that combines 2D with 3D. Like many cult films it was a box office failure, but it has many virtues that make it one of the most special films and deserves to be seen again and again.

We see how the protagonist has the great dream of finding Atlantis, but no one takes him seriously, but thanks to the legacy of his grandfather he gets the opportunity to achieve his dream. Since it is the name of the film, a great part of the plot takes place in Atlantis, there we meet one of the best female Disney characters, Kida, who is the princess of the place, and in fact she is the first one to become queen in a Disney film, long before Elsa in Frozen.

Despite the fact that Kida is such a good character, due to the failure at the box office the mouse company seems to want to pretend that she was not created and never include her with the other princesses, the same case as with Princess Elena from the film Taron and the Magic Cauldron.

Disney has erased almost all traces of Atlantis, it was a failure that only grossed 186 million dollars worldwide, that does not change that it is an excellent story, although there was a controversy for resembling the anime Fushigi no Umi no Nadia, although the official version is based on the book 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne.

Already from there you can surmise that the plot centers on an expedition and the dangers that come with it. Atlantis manages to convey a great sense of danger better than many films, whether facing the Leviathan or the burning fireflies, everything is threatening, even Atlantis itself feels dangerous.

The group of characters is very diverse, each one has a very well constructed personality, although there is a lot of talk about representation in film, no one talks much about the excellent inclusion in this 2002 film. But what makes them stand out so much is that they give us great dialogue, the villain seems to be the most normal in the story.

Another point in favor is that the viewer feels part of the journey is proposed in the story, although the journey is distressing, we were shocked to see Atlantis, the scenarios are amazing being able to notice elements of different cultures, as it is proposed that from there arose all the cultures of the world, even a unique language was designed for the natives of the island created by Marc Okrand, creator of Klingon and Vulcan.

What makes this film so special is how it manages to combine humor, action, unexpected twists, making the hour and a half of duration flow quickly without forgetting the excellent soundtrack by James Newton Howard. A story I never get tired of watching.
