“Are you rushing or dragging? (“Fast or slow?”) - Terence Fletcher
This is a passage that shows the character of a teacher and conductor Fletcher who goes beyond his confidence and is obsessed with the beat.
In an environment where it is unknown whether the player's own beat is fast or slow, this scene in which the unconscious is controlled and unacceptable only by the intuition of the player himself, is frightening. All of Drummer Andrew's effort to win Fletcher's recognition can be implied by trying to unmistakably match the beat he is obsessed with. With the conviction that he can become a 'great musician' when he endures extreme situations and coercive teaching methods and is painful but recognized by him.
Andrew, who gave up music in frustration, ignores Flatcher's direction and leads the orchestra with his own beat at the next opportunity to play. fly
Should this transcendental appearance of Andrew be interpreted as the content of overcoming adversity and becoming the great musician he longed for? I don't know what to do. Only Flatcher's meaningful smile and subtle communication with each other are visible, and the film's ending is open.
Anyone who has experienced frustration in the environment around them can sympathize with the hardships and wounds that Andrew suffered. Perhaps, the great immersion and pleasure felt in the ending part is because he sympathized with his musical fruition and state, who went beyond the limits and immersed himself in himself and was not obsessed with the results.
