Hello everyone and welcome to another series review. This is a brand new series that came out a couple of days ago and to be precise it aired on January 25/01/24. With the help of Netflix the creators behind Pablo Escobar came once again together to tell the story of Griselda Blanco to the masses. The star of the show that portrays Griselda is Sofia Vergara and the show consists of 6 episodes. Thus, you can see it is a mini-series.
Now i don't have much to say regarding the plot as i am not gonna spoil everything but i will give you an idea if you have never heard of that name before. The series focuses on how everyone learned and feared Griselda Blanco. How her journey begins and how she ended up called the Godmother of Cocaine that even the cartels feared. Thus, prepared for lots of drugs, lots of smaller plots that will lead to Griselda taking a position as a top-level crime boss and getting ready for many killings.
What I Liked and What i Didn't
Let's start with the acting. Everyone is doing pretty great and Sofia Vergara was much better than i expected her to be so kudos to her. The whole atmosphere and vibe of that era is also depicted quite perfectly to be honest and even though we talking about a mini series there is some balance in everything.
For example, you get the perfect amount of violent scenes, more care-free scenes, as well as dramatic ones. Ofc should they want it, they could make the series with way more episodes but as it is it's quite good so i can't really say anything negative regarding that aspect.
I can say though a lot of other negatives which i didn't read often before i started watching the show. You see i tend to read some reviews before watching anything, i don't want to waste my time entirely and i want to know way more when we talk about stories based on real people.
So the first negative is the actor's appearance. Sofia Vergara isn't to blame for this at all, but the actual Griselda Blanco is nowhere near the appearance of Sofia's. Except for the fact that they could literally find another actress that looked more similar to the said person, the prosthetics they added make zero difference with the actual appearance.
What really makes me furious though and i have seen it happen multiple times with Netflix, is that by watching the show you don't really get the actual facts straight. The character is portrayed quite differently than in reality and even her story seems different in some ways. Let me give you an example.
We get to see Griselda in episode 1 coming to Miami with a stolen uncut kilo of Cocaine in order to provide for her family and get away from the drug life. Would anyone since the beginning start feeling for her? Now the reality is that before coming to Miami, she had already a drug business that was running for 10 freaking years in New York. The reason that she came to Miami was to avoid federal charges.
I won't even bother stating the number of inaccurate things that are going on in this show. For someone who has no idea who she was or doesn't search after watching the show, you may think that she was actually a pretty decent human being and mother who "forced" to do what she did. In fact, she was one of the cruelest crime bosses ever. At the very least when series or movies are based on real people they should state that it's semi-fiction or something.
Overall, if you want to watch it as fiction then it's pretty good, to be honest, and you will like it. If you like facts and hate historical inaccuracies don't watch it and in general don't watch most related Netflix series/movies!
