The Metamorphosis of the Birds (2020). [Eng/Esp]

I am happily, visiting my family in the city of Naguanagua, Carabobo, Venezuela. It is four o'clock in the afternoon and I go out to prowl around the Las Quintas housing estate. I fly low over the avenues and shopping centres. I'm focused on visiting my photography and poetry teacher, Maigualida Espinoza. I push my body towards the southwest sector of the residential area to reach the door of Maigua and her family's house. I knock on the gate. He opens the lock, the poet Zoriam Martínez welcomes me, we greet each other, he invites me in. In the living room is his mother in a wheelchair, her leg amputated. Salmy, Maigua's husband and Zoriam's father, gives me a courteous handshake. We talk about the sacred and the profane. Joy dominated my meeting with this family that I appreciate for their spiritual and cultural level. They have strengthened my state of mind.

Me encuentro felizmente, visitando a mi familia en la ciudad de Naguanagua, Carabobo, Venezuela. Son las cuatro de la tarde y salgo a merodear por la urbanización Las Quintas. Hago un vuelo rasante por las avenidas y los centros comerciales. Estoy centrado en visitar a mi maestra de fotografía y poesía, Maigualida Espinoza. Impulso mi cuerpo hacia el sector suroeste del sector residencial para llegar a la puerta de la casa de Maigua y su familia. Llamo desde la reja. Abre la cerradura, me recibe el poeta Zoriam Martínez, nos saludamos, me invita a pasar. En la sala está su madre en una silla de ruedas, le amputaron una pierna. Salmy, esposo de Maigua y padre de Zoriam me da la mano de forma cortes. Conversamos de lo sagrado y de lo profano. La alegría dominó mi encuentro con esta familia que aprecio por su nivel espiritual y cultural. Fortalecen mi estado de ánimo.

Zoriam nimbly invites me to watch the film by the Portuguese Catalina Vasconcelos. The metamorphosis of the birds is going to be screened in the sector of La Ceiba on Bolivar Avenue in "Cacao Cultural". Zoriam, ágilmente, me invita para que aprecie la película, de la portuguesa Catalina Vasconcelos. La metamorfosis de los pájaros se va a proyectar en el sector de la Ceiba por la avenida Bolívar en “Cacao Cultural”. Me insiste, persuadiéndome, nerviosamente, para que asista a la convocatoria. -Con mucho gusto voy a asistir a la proyección de esta pieza fílmica. Le ratifico. -Muchas gracias, señor Hiram. Me dice, con voz musical, serena y amable.

The next day, at three o'clock in the afternoon, I arrived at the physical space of Cacao Cultural to enjoy this cinematographic work. It is an old house with a large hall where handicrafts, books and cocoa products from the different regions of Venezuela are exhibited. The presentations of the companies that produce this rich species have beautiful artistic designs.

Al día siguiente, a las tres de la tarde, llegué al espacio físico de Cacao cultural para disfrutar de esta obra cinematográfica. Es una antigua casa con una amplia sala donde se exponen artesanías, libros y productos del cacao de las diversas regiones de Venezuela. Las presentaciones de las empresas que producen esta rica especie tienen los formatos, unos preciosos diseños artísticos.

The public approaches rather slowly. The chairs are placed in the courtyard, which is covered by a grey cedar canvas. It is a family atmosphere, so this context has a popular character. Zoriam is preparing the technology with which the film will be shown. The chairs are filled by the invited guests, who are mostly women. Forty people out of the fifty chairs in the courtyard, this audience has a high cultural level.

Se acerca el público con cierta lentitud. Las sillas están colocadas en el patio que está cubierto por un lienzo de cedazo gris. Es un ambiente familiar, por lo tanto, este contexto tiene un carácter popular. Zoriam está en los preparativos de la tecnología con la que se va a proyectar la película. Las sillas se llenan por las personas invitadas, en su cuantidad y cualidad son femeninas. Son cuarenta personas de las cincuenta sillas que están en el patio, tiene un nivel cultural este público.

Maigualida and Salmy arrive with Laura Antillano. The screening of the film begins with the previous words of the poet Zoriam. The sound is low and the images on the screen are opaque. From this moment on, I am transported back in time to the black and white films I used to watch on weekends in the cinemas of my village. The film music magnetised my soul, especially the chaconne by Johann Sebastian Bach. Here I learn that it is music created for the spirits. Because Zoriam asks me what I liked about the film. It is spectacular, each space has a content. Especially the music, first of all; the immersion in the waters and the burning of the cards grabbed me. The chaconne made me search these days for the history of the music piece, it is a musical elixir, I smell it in my soul every time I can.

Llega Maigualida y Salmy con Laura Antillano. Se inicia la proyección de la película con las previas palabras del poeta Zoriam. Tiene una sonoridad baja y las imágenes en la pantalla son opacas. Desde este momento me traslado en el tiempo a las películas de blanco y negro que apreciaba los fines de semana en los cines de mi pueblo. La musicalización de la película magnetizó mi alma, en especial la chacona de Juan Sebastián Bach. Aquí me entero de que es una música creada para los espíritus. Porque Zoriam me pregunta qué me gustó la película. Es espectacular, cada espacio tiene un contenido. En especial, la música, en primer lugar; la inmersión en las aguas y la quema de las cartas me atraparon.

In "The Metamorphosis of the Birds", the characters abstract me subjectively in these eternal voyages through Henrique's sea with the linking of the letters Beatriz receives. She is a woman in a cloistered house with her six children. Jacinto, the eldest son, is possessed by the chimera of flying and his devotion to birds. Zulmira is connected in this film with the birds. The five children are part of the complexity of Beatriz and Henrique's love. The filmmaker's creativity expresses her permanent search for personal evolution, exploring themes of identity, connection with nature and the dissolution of old social formats. The film invites us to reflect on our own cages and the possibility of freeing ourselves to achieve fulfilment, a balanced, healthy, coherent, rational and happy life.

En "La metamorfosis de los pájaros", los personajes me abstraen y subjetivamente en esos viajes eternos por el mar de Henrique con la vinculación de las cartas que recibe Beatriz. Ella es una mujer en una enclaustrada casa con sus seis hijos. Jacinto, el hijo mayor, está poseído por la quimera de volar y su devoción por los pájaros. Zulmira, está conectada en esta obra fílmica con los pájaros. Los cinco hijos forman parte de la complejidad del amor de Beatriz y Henrique. La creatividad de la cineasta expresa su permanente búsqueda de la evolución personal, se exploran temas de la identidad, la conexión con la naturaleza y la disolución de los viejos formatos sociales. La película nos invita a reflexionar sobre nuestras propias jaulas y la posibilidad de liberarnos para alcanzar la plenitud, una vida equilibrada, sana, coherente, racional y feliz.

The scenography of this film allows me to immerse myself in a pit where the family lives in a cloistered house. I suffocate, I breathe deeply. Here, from this house, one needs to leave in search of freedom, of course, one needs to fly where the transformation into birds is urgent. The environment of this film is the vegetable world, it is a substantial element of this scenography that suggests that freedom is the definitive flight of the transformation of the spirit.

La escenografía de esta película me permite sumergirme en un foso donde perviven la familia en una enclaustrada casa. Me asfixio respiro profundamente. Aquí de esta casa se necesita salir a buscar la libertad, claro, se necesita volar donde es urgente la transformación en pájaros. El medio ambiente de esta cinta fílmica es el mundo vegetal, es un elemento sustancial de esta escenografía que sugiere que la libertad es el vuelo definitivo de la transformación del espíritu.

The poetic discourse: The film uses a poetic language, through words they not only describe reality, they are magical, evoking and transforming. The love of the couple that disperses in the infinite sea. Jacinto's expressions: "The birds are like us, they dream of flying higher" and, "The house was like a ship run aground on land".
The silence calmed my soul and I had to fight to avoid falling into laziness. It is a primordial factor in the film. The moments of silence in the film are as important as the words.
The natural sounds allow the imaginary to fly; like the singing of the birds, the wind through the leaves and the sound of the sea, they create a poetic and evocative atmosphere.
The composition of the scenography and the poetic discourse generates an atmosphere that is unprecedented in the film. It consciously and unconsciously encourages reflection, reverie and a connection to the aesthetics of the natural world.

El discurso poético: La película utiliza un lenguaje poético, a través de las palabras no solo describen la realidad, son mágicas, al evocar transforman. El amor de la pareja que se dispersa en el infinito mar. Las expresiones de Jacinto: "Los pájaros son como nosotros, sueñan con volar más alto" y, "La casa era como un barco encallado en la tierra".
El silencio me aquieto el alma que tuve que luchar para evitar caer en la pereza. Es un factor primordial en la película. Los momentos de silencio en la película son tan importantes como las palabras.
Los sonidos naturales permiten que vuele el imaginario; como el canto de los pájaros, el viento entre las hojas y el sonido del mar, crean una atmósfera poética y evocadora.
La composición de la escenografía y el discurso poético genera una atmósfera inédita en la película. Se fomenta consciente e inconscientemente con la reflexión, la ensoñación y a la conexión con la estética del mundo natural.
