The Hunt is a 2012 Danish drama film starring Mad Mikelssen and directed by Thomas Vinterberg.
The plot takes place in a small town where all its inhabitants know each other, the men have the tradition of being hunting companions and this is carried from generation to generation, strengthening the bonds of friendship between its inhabitants, Lucas lives in this place , a divorced man who tries to maintain a close coexistence with his son Marcus despite the limits set by his ex-wife, this man works in a daycare center, showing his ability to work with children, he is loved by his co-workers and in turn the children show their trust and affection.
Things get complicated for Lucas when he is accused of child abuse, being a small town the news spreads quickly, the girl who accuses him is lying but her parents believe her because they trust her, consequently the parents of other children begin to look for signs of abuse and as if it were an agreed act the children begin to make statements or doubt their own memories, when the police intervene to clarify the situation it is already too late for the general opinion, everyone in the town believes that Lucas is an abuser of kids.
The people Lucas trusts turn their backs on him and begin to attack him, he is fired from his job, he is the victim of physical attacks, among other things, his life is almost completely destroyed and he continues to assert his innocence.
The film presents a simple story but at the same time it is complex, it creates a lot of tension, on the one hand the parents and people in general feel the need to believe the children and not doubt their words, they do not have the ability to discern what is right or wrong when their emotions intervene in something as delicate as child sexual abuse, in a few words the film shows how a person's reputation once it has been damaged never recovers, people seem to have a short memory when it comes to of the good deeds, but when it comes to something bad, people do not forget and deny the possibility of assuming an error caused by the damage.
The laws say that everyone is innocent until proven guilty, but as a society, people who are put on a moral trial are always lost even when they are proven innocent, because people tend to always believe in guilt, the unfortunate of all this is that it is such a sensitive issue that assuming the innocence of the accused is something that is frowned upon because in general there are more cases where the person is guilty.
I think the director of the film knew how to handle the scenarios and the development of the story very well, creating a climate of uncertainty, the film at a certain point seems like it was going to have a different outcome, but it doesn't exactly happen, it has a kind of ending open that I see as an open invitation to reflect on human behavior, on the moral judgments that it has and that people in general are not willing to forgive or surrender.
