(ESP-ENG) Apartment 7A - Movie Review! [Spooky Season]

Oficialmente estamos en el mes del miedo y del terror por lo que durante todo Octubre trataré de traer las películas de terror que vayan apareciendo por ahí. El día comenzamos con una precuela, si, de esas que tanto les está gustando hacer a Hollywood; precuelas, secuelas, segundas partes, etc, un sin fin de producciones que lo que hacen es demostrar que en la mayoría de los casos no se está en el nivel de los trabajos originales. Algo así es el caso de este film, uno que responde a los inicios de nada más y nada menos que del clásico del terror **Rosemary's Baby** de Roman Polanski, aquella obra de arte de 1968.

Officially we are in the month of fear and terror so throughout October I will try to bring the horror movies that are appearing out there. The day begins with a prequel, yes, one of those that Hollywood is so fond of making; prequels, sequels, sequels, sequels, etc, endless productions that what they do is to demonstrate that in most cases they are not at the level of the original works. Something like that is the case of this film, one that responds to the beginnings of nothing more and nothing less than the horror classic Rosemary's Baby by Roman Polanski, that work of art from 1968.

Qué pasó exactamente en aquel apartamento antes de que Rosemary y su esposo se mudaran allí? - pues bueno, esta es la historia de Terry Gionoffrio (Julia Garner) una bailarina que no la está pasando muy bien que digamos, tuvo un accidente en una obra de teatro y ahora no sabe muy bien que hacer. Desesperada busca, por cualquier medio, conseguir un papel en la obra más importante de Broadway pero aquello no le sale bien. Es en este momento de desesperación cuando se topa con una pareja mayor, Minnie y Roman Castevet (Dianne Wiest y Kevin McNally) quienes de la nada les comienza a ofrecer una serie de cosas a Terry con el argumento de que quieren cuidarla porque nunca tuvieron hijos.

What exactly happened in that apartment before Rosemary and her husband moved in? - Well, this is the story of Terry Gionoffrio (Julia Garner) a dancer who is not having a very good time, she had an accident in a play and now she doesn't know what to do. Desperate, she tries, by any means, to get a role in the most important play on Broadway but it does not work out well. It is at this moment of desperation when she runs into an older couple, Minnie and Roman Castevet (Dianne Wiest and Kevin McNally) who out of nowhere start offering Terry a series of things with the argument that they want to take care of her because they never had children.

Pero como siempre pasa, no todo es tan bueno como para ser verdad. Una vez Terry se muda a aquel famoso edificio comienza a experimentar cosas extrañas, a tener visiones, sueños raros, por lo que rápidamente empieza a dudar y a ser escéptica con todo aquello. Claramente Minnie y Roman no son quienes dicen ser, detrás de ellos hay una secta satánica que adora al diablo y están buscando traer el hijo del gran señor de las tinieblas a la Tierra, básicamente de lo que se trata Rosemary's Baby. Este film responde a ciertas cosas que pasan en este clásico y quizás da un poco más de contexto para complementar y profundizar la película de Polanski.

But as it always happens, not everything is so good as to be true. Once Terry moves into that famous building she begins to experience strange things, to have visions, strange dreams, so she quickly begins to doubt and be skeptical about everything. Clearly Minnie and Roman are not who they say they are, behind them there is a satanic sect that worships the devil and are looking to bring the son of the great lord of darkness to Earth, basically what Rosemary's Baby is about. This film responds to certain things that happen in this classic and perhaps gives a little more context to complement and deepen Polanski's film.

Obviamente estamos ante un thriller de terror psicológico, no es una película en donde el gore ni la violencia se haga presente sino más bien todo lo referente a las fuerzas oscuras, brujería, hechicería pero sin que esto sea muy gráfico, es decir, casi todo está de manera subjetiva para que el espectador sea quien le de imagen a todo aquello. Si vemos unas cuantas cosas, algún ritual, alguna imagen del mismísimo diablo pero todo es muy puesto con cuidado. Con esto les digo que por lo menos a mi nunca me asustó nada de lo que vi, si hay un poco de tensión a veces, sientes algo pesada la vibra pero no mucho más. Los jumpscare los trataron de hacer, el tema es que no funcionaron conmigo.

Obviously this is a psychological horror thriller, it is not a film where gore or violence is present but rather everything related to dark forces, witchcraft, sorcery but without being very graphic, that is, almost everything is subjective so that the viewer is the one who gives the image to all that. We do see a few things, some rituals, some images of the devil himself, but everything is very carefully placed. With this I can tell you that at least I was never scared of anything I saw, if there is a little tension at times, you feel something heavy vibe but not much more. The jumpscare was tried, the thing is that it didn't work for me.

El tema acá es que al tener presente al film de Rosemary's Baby ya uno sabe de que va y lo que va a pasar con cada personaje. Si eres de los que no la han visto pues es posible que si te adentres más en la historia y la vivas con más intensidad. Ahora, visualmente si es muy buena, la esencia de 1968 está muy presente, hay referencias, guiños; en ese aspecto si está muy cool. La representación de la maldad está muy estilizada, es raro que esto pero no es nada grotesco, de ahí el por que creo que da cero miedo, mientras que la intriga y el mismo suspenso es algo que siempre está presente.

The point here is that if you have seen the film Rosemary's Baby, you already know what it is about and what is going to happen with each character. If you are one of those who have not seen it, it is possible that if you go deeper into the story and live it with more intensity. Now, visually it is very good, the essence of 1968 is very present, there are references, winks; in that aspect it is very cool. The representation of evil is very stylized, it is rare that this but it is nothing grotesque, hence why I think it gives zero fear, while the intrigue and the same suspense is something that is always present.

Julia Garner me gusta mucho como actriz, en Ozark y en Inventing Anna me pareció espectacular. Acá no lo hace nada mal, ella es muy top actuando, el drama y ahora el terror se le da muy bien. Creo que el film se salva gracias a ella, hay un par de escenas en donde destaca más de la cuenta. Nada malo que decir. En cuanto a los demás pues muy promedio todo, los Castevet actuales siento que no llegan a los originales, comparar es odioso pero inevitable. Al final es un film para mi, un tanto innecesario, si no se hacía nada pasaba nada pero nada, Hollywood se está quedando sin ideas originales.

I really like Julia Garner as an actress, in Ozark and Inventing Anna I thought she was spectacular. Here she does not do badly at all, she is very top acting, drama and now horror is very good for her. I think the film is saved thanks to her, there are a couple of scenes where she stands out more than the account. Nothing bad to say. As for the others, everything is very average, I feel that the current Castevets don't reach the originals, comparing is hateful but inevitable. In the end it is a film for me, somewhat unnecessary, if nothing was done nothing happened but nothing, Hollywood is running out of original ideas.

Le doy un 6.5/10. No es una película mala, se puede ver, entretiene, actuaciones decentes pero hasta ahí. Para los efectos de profundizar esta historia es un tanto irrelevante, como film para verlo en este mes, ideal. Dura poco más de 1 hora y media, les dejo el tráiler por acá.

I give it a 6.5/10. It's not a bad movie, watchable, entertaining, decent performances but that's as far as it goes. For the purposes of deepening this story is somewhat irrelevant, as a film to watch this month, ideal. It lasts a little over an hour and a half, I leave the trailer here.
