Tag - - Netflix Review

I’ve not watched any film like Tag before. In fact, I didn’t imagine it would be a plausible premise for a movie, even a comedy one unless it was an animation, but this movie proved me wrong because it does exist, it made a lot of money and is fairly recent. Talk about living under a rock. Also, this film is actually based on a real-life story.

It was directed by Jeff Tomsic ad written by Rob McKittrick and Mark Steilen and was released in 2018.

Tag is a game where you basically chase friends until you can catch one(the person who becomes the tagger) and repeats the process. So it should be a game solely for kids, right? Not so fast. Tag here is played by five grown-up men every May as a way to keep their friendship alive for all the years they have known each other which was since childhood. These were grown men with respectable professions who went to great lengths to chase each other down in order to tag the next person :)

It’s a totally ridiculous premise but once I opened my mind to it, it became quite a lot of fun, to be honest. In this game, as with all games, one of them was very good at it. In fact, he had never been tagged because he could run so fast and managed to think of elaborate ways to avoid being tagged. They all took this game quite seriously. This guy was Jerry. He also happened to be planning his wedding and getting married soon, so another friend Hoagie calls on the other members of the tag group to play tag one last time and hopefully tag Jerry at his most vulnerable state.

The whole thing is funny because not only is a wedding the last place to plan a tag without risking the wrath of a bride, the many mishaps that happen along the way make it worth it. At first, I really thought it was going to be ridiculous until the end, but somehow in this ridiculousness, this group was able to show us a greater meaning in their activities. Through their running around, we get to see the vulnerable bits of some members, and we learn about the family and health issues they’re facing. Jerry himself is a recovering alcoholic(something the group knew nothing about until the tag game). It’s no wonder I guess that it did well at the box office.

I loved this quote from the movie and I think it's true:

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” -George Bernard Shaw

Also, this might not be a joke for all tastes but I found it funny. It was a random conversation between two of the guys at the wedding:

"What's the difference between a Episcopalian and a Lutheran?"
"Episcopalian don't eat fish."
"That's...that's a Pescetarian. Not a religion."
"They're all fanatics. I don't know."
-Sable and Chilli

I’ll rate this a 9/10 because of how random it was. It’s a film I would classify under ‘breaking protocol of what can be in a move’ if this was a category. Or even in real life because like I said, this is actually based on a true-life story. If you’ve watched it, let me know what you thought about it.
